Lourdes finally played at home for the first time in program history on Sunday afternoon at Pacesetter Park, but Davenport spoiled the day with a pair of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference victories, downing the Gray Wolves 6-1 and 10-0.
“It was great to finally be able to play at home,” head coach
Jo Ann Gordon said after the game. We had a great crowd and appreciate the support. Unfortunately we need to find a way to string some hits together as opposed to having just one per inning.”
Davenport jumped on top in the opening inning of game one, taking advantage of two walks and a hit by pitch to scratch out a run. The Gray Wolves turned an inning-ending double play thought to avoid further trouble.
The Panthers added an unearned run in the third and scored another in the fourth on a double by Debra Burton to take a 3-0 lead. A two-run double by Amber Getty in the sixth increased the lead to five before Lourdes found the scoreboard.
After putting a runner on third in both the fourth and fifth innings,
Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) doubled to lead off the sixth and moved to third on a groundout.
Hayley Roberts (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) lifted a sacrifice fly to right that plated Megyesi with Lourdes lone run of the day.
Davenport added one more run in the seventh to earn the game one victory.
Sam Cole went the distance for the win (15-4) for the Panthers in the circle, allowing five hits and walking one. She struck out six.
Kasey Graham (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) suffered the loss (2-8), giving up four earned runs and six hits in 5.2 innings of work. She also walked five.
Game two saw the visitors jump on top with a pair of runs in the second following a Gray Wolf error and added a third run one inning later on a squeeze bunt. Another run in the fifth and a two-run single by KC Dunne in the sixth pushed the Davenport lead to 6-0.
The Panthers added four more runs in the seventh to close out the scoring, three on a home run by Getty, who finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBI.
Chelsea Goebel (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) had two of Lourdes four hits in the nightcap. Kyleigh Linebaugh went the distance for Davenport (23-8-1, 6-0 WHAC) earning the win (7-4), walking just one and striking out one.
Casey Cherry (Comstock Park, Mich./Comstock Park H.S.) suffered the loss (2-6), allowing six runs, four of which were earned, and seven hits in five innings in the circle. She walked four and struck out three.
Lourdes (4-14, 2-2) will return to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves step out of WHAC play to travel to Spring Arbor, Mich. First pitch of the doubleheader against Spring Arbor is set for 3:30 p.m.
