Lourdes University's softball team saw its inaugural season come to a close on Thursday afternoon, falling to Siena Heights 9-1 at Bailey Park in Battle Creek, Mich. in an elimination game of the 2013 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament.
Chelsea Goebel (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) went 3-for-3 for the Gray Wolves in the lead-off spot, tallying all but two of the team's five hits to lead the way offensively.
Siena Heights (19-22), the tournament's seventh seed, took the lead quickly in the top of the first on a Katie O'Hotzke double three batters into the game and added another RBI hit to build a 2-0 lead. A two-run home run by Morgan Warfield in the third doubled the advantage and the Saints added a fifth run on a two-out double in the fourth.
A home run by Anna Alcorta in the fifth along with an unearned run made it 7-0 Siena Heights and the Saints added two more tallies with two outs in the seventh inning.
Lourdes, the sixth seed, finally found the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs
Lauren Marstin (Brookneal, Va./William Campbell H.S.) beat out an infield single and scored one batter later on
Hillary West's (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) single into the gap in right-center to break up the shutout.
O'Hotzke went the distance in the circle for the Saints to pick up the win (13-12), striking out five while scattering the five hits and not walking anyone.
Casey Cherry (Comstock Park, Mich./Comstock Park H.S.) suffered the loss (7-10), surrendering four runs on five hits in 2.2 innings of work. She walked two and struck out three.
O'Hotzke finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI for the Saints while Warfield was also 3-for-4 with three RBI. Siena Heights finished the afternoon with 12 hits.
Lourdes's inaugural season of softball comes to a close with a 12-24 record.
