Lourdes University hung with 11
th-ranked Cornerstone most of the night on Wednesday, but came up just short of the upset, dropping a 75-67 decision to the Golden Eagles at Mol Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich.

"Cornerstone is a great team," head coach
Andre Smith said afterwards. "I thought we played hard but this is a tough loss. We had some chances but we didn't capitalize."

E.J. Blackwell (Rochester, Pa./Rochester H.S.) led three Gray Wolves in double figures with 17 points while
Zach Steinmetz (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's H.S.) added 16 points and a team-high six rebounds.Â
Stephen Couvillion (Baton Rouge, La./Christian Life H.S.) chipped in 11 points off of the bench for Lourdes.

Trailing 14-9, Lourdes scored six straight points to take its first lead of the night at the 11:24 mark of the first half. The Golden Eagles responded with six points of their own before the Gray Wolves added their second 6-0 run of the night to pull back in front 21-20 at the 6:49 mark following a triple by Couvillion.

The Gray Wolves increased their lead to four, 26-22, before a late 12-2 run by Cornerstone put the hosts on top 34-30 heading into the locker room.

Another triple by Couvillion tied the game at 40 with just over 14 minutes remaining in the game but Cornerstone immediately answered with a three-pointer of its own. Lourdes retied the game at 50 with 10 minutes to play but was never able to capture the lead the rest of the way.

The Golden Eagles pushed its lead to seven, 62-55, with 4:41 to play and the Gray Wolves were never able to pull closer than three the rest of the way.

Cornerstone outrebounded Lourdes 39-25 for the night, including a 13-7 edge on the offensive board. The Golden Eagles outscored Lourdes 18-8 on second chance opportunities.

"There were some key aspects of the game that cost us," Smith added. "They really outrebounded us which led to second chance opportunities and we had some turnovers at some key times which hurt."

Ben Lanning led Cornerstone (5-1, 2-0 WHAC) with 21 points and 11 rebounds while Kyle Steigenga added 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting and nine boards.

Lourdes (4-2, 1-1) will continue its road trip on Saturday afternoon, heading to Southfield, Mich. to battle Lawrence Tech. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at Ridler Fieldhouse.
