Lourdes University's softball team wrapped up its 12-game spring break trip in Clermont, Fla. on Saturday morning, defeating both Carroll (Wis.) and Mount Vernon Nazarene to move to the .500 mark on the season. The Gray Wolves defeated Carroll 8-0 before downing the Cougars 4-3 in the second day of the game.
With the two wins, the Gray Wolves improve to 6-6 on the year, and head back north with a school-record four-game winning streak.
The Gray Wolves unleashed the offense in the opening inning of game one, scoring four times.
Alyssa Schaub (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) reached on a three-base error to lead off the game and scored on a wild pitch.
Ashley Yeager (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) and
Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) followed with back-to-back doubles, making it 2-0.
Kayla Encalado (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) increased the lead to four with a two-run double to right-center.
Lourdes added three more runs in the in the third.
Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.) doubled home Megyesi with one out and later scored on a wild pitch.
Erica Marvaso (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) added a pinch hit single to score
Hillary West (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) with the final run of the inning.
Schaub led off the fourth with a triple and scored on a single by Megyesi with Lourdes final run of the game.
Megyesi finished the game with two hits and two RBI while Encalado also had two RBI.
Kasey Graham (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) went the distance for the shutout, scattering six hits over the five innings. She stuck out one and did not walk anyone.
Amanda Desotell suffered the loss for Carroll (1-4), giving up four runs and three hits in just one inning of work.
Lourdes jumped on top in game two as well as Schaub led off with a walk, stole second, moved to third on a flyout, and scored on a stolen base.
Mount Vernon Nazarene (2-3) answered with two runs in the bottom of the first and another in the second to take a 3-1 lead. The Gray Wolves cut the deficit in half with an unearned run in the third. Mosiniak singled home Megyesi who had reached on an error.
Lourdes tied the game on a double steal attempt when the throw to second went into centerfield, allowing
Taylor Derr (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.) to cross the plate. Megyesi then delivered the go ahead hit, a single to left, which plated Yeager.
The game was still 4-3 into the bottom of the seventh when Mount Vernon Nazarene put runners on the corners with one out. An apparent double play ball seemed to end the game, but a lineup substitution infraction gave the Cougars new life.
Casey Cherry (Comstock Park, Mich./Comstock Park H.S.) was still able to get the final two outs though, one via strikeout before a comebacker ended the game.
Cherry gave up eight hits and just two earned runs while striking out three for the win. Ashley Riffell suffered the loss in a complete game effort for the Cougars, giving up four hits.
Lourdes (6-6) is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday evening with a doubleheader against Indiana Wesleyan. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. at Wildcat Field in Marion, Ind.
