Lourdes Sweeps Doubleheader from UNOH in Home Debut

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Alyssa Schaub's (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) opposite field RBI single in the bottom of the ninth of game two lifted Lourdes to a doubleheader sweep of Northwestern Ohio on Saturday afternoon at Pacesetter Park.  The Gray Wolves won the opener 2-1 before taking game two 3-2 in extra innings.

With the game tied at two, Ashley Yeager (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) singled to right with one out before proceeding to steal both second and third bases.  Schaub then delivered her second hit of the game, a line single to right to plate Yeager with the winning run.

Lourdes took the lead in the opening inning of game two as Schaub singled and moved around to third on a single by Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.).  Hayley Roberts (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) drove home Schaub with the game's first run on an infield groundout.

Taylor Derr (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.) created Lourdes' second run all by herself in the second inning.  She reached on a bunt single, stole second and moved to third when the throw went into centerfield.  Derr scored on a two-out wild pitch to make it 2-0 Gray Wolves.

Northwestern Ohio (10-12, 0-6 WHAC) tied the game in the fifth.  Four singles in the inning, the last two coming with two outs, plated a pair of runs.  The Racers threatened to score more throughout the game, leaving 13 runners on base, including seven in scoring position.

Hanna Allison (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) earned the win (2-2) with 4.1 innings of scoreless relief.  The freshman scattered seven hits but walked just one to pick up the victory.    Sam Merillat (Hudson, Mich./Hudson H.S.) did not pick up a decision, but allowed just two runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings in her first collegiate start.

Chelsea Miller suffered the loss (4-3), her second of the day, in relief despite giving up just the one run and two hits in four innings of work.

Alyssa McQueen went 4-for-5 in game two while Shelby Lucas and Kelly Merkle both had three hits as part of the Racers' 14-hit attack.  Schaub was the only Gray Wolf with a multi-hit game.

In the opener Lourdes scored twice in the opening inning and Casey Cherry (Comstock Park, Mich./Comstock Park H.S.) did the rest in the circle, tossing a complete game, giving up just one unearned run.

Schaub led off the game with a walk and scored on a triple by Kayla Encalado (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.).  Megyesi followed with a three-bagger of her own to straight away center, making it 2-0 Gray Wolves.

The Racers cut the deficit in half in the fifth with an unearned run, and had a chance to tie the game with a two-out single, but Chelsea Goebel (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) threw the would-be tying run out at the plate.

Cherry did the rest, striking out four while scattering just seven hits to earn the win (3-2).  She did not walk anyone.  Miller suffered the loss, giving up just four hits and the two runs while striking out eight in a complete game effort.  She did walk four though.

Lourdes (8-10, 2-4) will remain home on Sunday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves host Indiana Tech.  First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at Pacesetter Park.
