th in the latest NAIA top-25 poll, continued its undefeated season on Wednesday evening with a 25-16, 25-12, 25-13 victory on the road over Michigan-Dearborn at UMD Fieldhouse in Dearborn, Mich.
"I'm just glad we got the win," head coach
Greg Reitz said after the match. "We started off slow, but after the middle of the first set our serve and pass was pretty good. We had a few too many unforced errors that we will need to clean up heading into this weekend."
The opening set was tied at 13 before Lourdes went on a big run to earn the win.
Stef Comte (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame H.S.) served up a run as the Gray Wolves scored the final six points. Lourdes hit .379 in the first set offensively.
The Gray Wolf defense did the job in the final two sets, holding the Wolverines to negative hitting numbers in each set. Lourdes raced out to a 12-4 lead in the second and had another 6-0 run keyed by three serves aces from
Molly Shonk (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Hartley H.S.). In the final set
Stephanie Ruffing (Columbus, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty H.S.) was at the service line for runs of five and six straight points, the latter to close the match.
Stephanie Richards (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg H.S.) led the way for the Gray Wolves with 11 kills while Shonk and Ruffing each had 10 of their own. Ruffing added 11 digs to complete the double-double while Shonk hit .421.
Evan Matheson (Fallon, Nev./Churchill County H.S.) hit .444 with six kills.
Meghan Birr (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores H.S.) handed out 35 assists.
Michi Jimenez (Vega Baja, P.R./Juan Quirindongo Morrell H.S.) registered 10 digs as Lourdes outdug the Wolverines 35-18.
Ashley Parks and Amanda Smolinski led Michigan-Dearborn (6-22, 1-16 WHAC) with four kills each as the Wolverines hit -.026 as a team. Megan Wright paced the defense with a team-high 12 digs.
Lourdes (23-0, 17-0) will head to Lima, Ohio for a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon. The Gray Wolves will face Cornerstone at noon before battling host Northwestern Ohio at 4:30 p.m.
