Lourdes battled third-seeded Marygrove to the final whistle on Saturday afternoon at the Marygrove Soccer Field in Detroit, Mich., but in the end dropped a 1-0 decision to the Mustangs in the quarterfinals of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament to end the program's inaugural season.
"I thought we played a great game today," head coach
Barry Spitzer said. "We played well and I'm very proud of the guys. We created some good chances, but at the end of the day they scored and we didn't."
The two sides played a scoreless opening half, with Lourdes creating the only shot on goal in the stanza. The Mustangs found the lone goal of the match just 4:30 after intermission. Abdoulie Jallow found Gbenga Ayanwale on a combination play and scored far post from inside of the box for the only offense Marygrove would need.
Marygrove (12-6-1) outshot Lourdes by just an 11-10 margin for the match, but the Gray Wolves had the edge in shots on frame 4-2. Aymann Youssef made four saves in the shutout for the Mustangs while
Mark Darling (Jacksonville, Fla./Mandarin H.S.) made the lone Gray Wolf save in the second half.
Jose Cedillo (Atlanta, Ga./Norcross H.S.) played the opening 45 minutes between the posts for Lourdes.
Lourdes, the tournament's sixth seed, held a 6-5 advantage in corner kick opportunities as well.
Marygrove advances to face Northwestern Ohio in the semifinals while Lourdes finishes at the .500 mark overall at 7-7-2.
