Lourdes Women Bounce Back with Easy Win at Akron Wayne

After suffering a narrow loss on Friday night, Lourdes rebounded Saturday afternoon with a convincing 68-20 victory over Akron Wayne at the Boyer Health & PE Center in Orrville, Ohio.

The Gray Wolves allowed just four points in the first half, two in each quarter, and all 14 players that dressed saw at least nine minutes of action, with no Lourdes player seeing more than 19 minutes on the floor.

"This was a good opportunity to get some kids some significant minutes in a game," head coach Karen McConnell said afterwards.  "Some of our young players were able to get experience on the floor."

Lourdes scored the game's first 19 points following a three-pointer by Lindsey Motycka (Convoy, Ohio/Crestview H.S.) before the Warriors scored with 18 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.

The Gray Wolves again held Akron Wayne without a basket for the first nine minutes of the second period, growing the lead to 35-2 before taking a 37-4 advantage into the locker room.

Lourdes shot 48.4% from the floor in the opening 20 minutes while holding the Warriors to just 2-for-32 from the field.

A 9-0 run closed the third quarter and following Mariah DuPree's (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Whiteford H.S.) triple, Lourdes took a 56-10 lead into the final 10 minutes.  The Gray Wolves led by as many as 52 in the final period before closing with a 48-point margin of victory.

DuPree and Niki Meyer (Liberty Center, Ohio/Liberty Center H.S.) led Lourdes with 11 points each while Motycka grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.  The Gray Wolves shot 43.3% from the floor while holding the Warriors to just a 9.1% clip (5-for-55) for the night.  Lourdes also outrebounded Akron Wayne 57-33.

Taleya Clark led Akron Wayne (0-1) with 11 points while Sarah Berry grabbed 11 rebounds for the Warriors.

Lourdes (2-1) will return home on Tuesday evening as the Gray Wolves host Mount Vernon Nazarene in the final tune-up prior to league play.  Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Tam-o-Shanter.
