Photo GalleryJesse Fidler (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) and
Lauren Tilden (Ravenna, Ohio/Ravenna H.S.) each scored 16 points on Wednesday evening to help lead Lourdes to a 65-62 victory in overtime against Marygrove at Tam-o-Shanter.
Â
The Gray Wolves had to overcome just 20% shooting from the floor in the second half and 3-of-22 (13.6%) shooting from three-point range in the contest to win for the second straight time at home.
Â
"This was a much needed win," head coach
Karen McConnell stated after the game. "You hate to be put into that situation, but I was pleased with how we came together and battled. Made shots would have solved a lot of our problems but we took too many quick shots."
Â
The first half was tight most of the way until Lourdes went on a 10-3 run over five minutes to build an eight-point advantage, 31-23 with 3:32 remaining before halftime. The Gray Wolves lead was still seven with under two minutes to play when the Mustangs ended the half with a quick spurt, scoring five straight points to pull within two, 33-31 at the break.
Â
The Gray Wolves scored the first six points of the second half to increase the lead to eight before going cold from the floor. Lourdes went nearly 10 minutes without a field goal and a 7-0 run by Marygrove put the Mustangs on top 42-41 at the 8:54 mark.Â
Erica Davis (Cleveland, Ohio/Holy Name H.S.) finally broke Lourdes drought with a jumper at the four-minute mark, reclaiming the lead for the Gray Wolves 47-45.
Â
Seven straight points in the next two minutes allowed Marygrove to build its largest lead of the game, 52-47, with two minutes remaining in regulation before a Tilden three-pointer and a basket by
Jessica Durr (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton H.S.) tied the game with 1:18 to play. Neither team was able to score down the stretch, forcing the extra session.
Â
Baskets by Fidler and Tilden to start overtime put Lourdes on top but Marygrove responded. A three-pointer by Tiffany Bradford put the visitors in front at the 2:43 mark. Fidler answered and the teams exchanged leads down the stretch. Another Bradford three with 47.5 seconds left put the Mustangs in front before Fidler answered with a pair from the free throw line with 26.7 seconds remaining to give Lourdes the lead for good.
Â
Marygrove had chances to tie or take the lead late following missed free throws, but a pair of turnovers allowed Lourdes to take a 63-61 lead into the final seconds. Raeha Weaver was fouled with 3.2 seconds remaining, but missed the first of two free throws and Tilden iced the game with a pair from the charity stripe at the other end of the floor.
Â
Fidler and
Emily Orsini (Akron, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban H.S.) led Lourdes on the glass with nine rebounds each while Tilden had seven steals to go along with her point total.
Â
Bradford led Marygrove (4-12, 2-17 WHAC) with 17 points and nine rebounds, making five three-pointers in the contest. Kierra Jordan added a double-double, scoring 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting, while grabbing 10 rebounds.
