After nearly a week of cancellations, Lourdes baseball team opened its season on Wednesday afternoon dropping a doubleheader to fourth-ranked Missouri Baptist 14-1 and 12-0 at Spartan Field in Saint Louis, Mo.
Â
"It was a tough first day for us," head coach
Andy Ham said. "We made some mental mistakes today which come with being on the field for the first time. What is disappointing is that they are things we have been working on. At the plate we didn't do a good job of making adjustments either."
Â
In the opener Missouri Baptist jumped on the Gray Wolves early, scoring six times in the opening inning while adding another six runs in the third. Aaron Collazo and Orlando Olivera each homered in the third helping the Spartans take a 12-0 lead.
Â
A two-run home run by Elisha Roundtree in the fifth completed the scoring for the hosts while Lourdes finally broke through on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth.Â
Nick Toth (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson H.S.) doubled to right field to plate
Kyle Sherman (Collierville, Tenn./Rossville Christian Academy) with the Gray Wolves' lone run of the game.
Â
Colby Duncan allowed just two hits, the double and a single to
Zak Laubscher (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.), in six innings of work to earn the win (1-0) for Missouri Baptist, striking out four.Â
Frank Shaffer (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.) suffered the loss (0-1) for Lourdes, surrendering 12 runs, 10 of which were earned, on eight hits in 2.1 innings. He walked three and struck out two.
Â
Game two saw
Drew Lepiarz (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) in the game for the first four innings. The senior scattered just three single runs on five hits while striking out five during the stretch, but still suffered the loss (0-1).Â
Â
Missouri Baptist broke the game open in the sixth, scoring nine times. The Spartans finished the game with just nine hits, but took advantage of eight walks and three hit batsmen.
Â
Joel Duggins earned the win (1-0) for Missouri Baptist, working 4.1 innings while scattering just three hits and striking out four. Three Spartans combined for the shutout.
Â
Garrett Jex (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.) went 2-for-3 for the Gray Wolves in the loss as Lourdes managed just five hits in the nightcap.
Â
"Missouri Baptist is definitely a good team," Ham added. "If we can do some of the little things though, there is no reason can can't compete with them."
Â
Lourdes (0-2) and Missouri Baptist (15-1) will wrap up their four-game midweek series on Thursday afternoon with another doubleheader. Game one will begin at 1 p.m. EDT at Spartan Field.
