Lourdes battled back from a two-goal deficit at halftime to defeat Lawrence Tech 13-12 on Wednesday evening at Detroit Country Day school in Beverly Hills, Mich. in the Gray Wolves' CCLA South Division opener.
Â
Danny Bichsel (Westerville, Ohio/North H.S.) scored seven times and
Dalton Vowles (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's H.S.) added five tallies in the triumph.
Â
"Tonight we played a very exciting game," head coach
Patrick Yannarelli said. "We fought hard the entire game and really came together as a team at the end to seal the victory. Hopefully this will be a turning point in our season."
Â
Bichsel scored the game's first two goals less than 150 seconds into the contest before Lawrence Tech tallied five unanswered goals to build a 5-2 advantage. The duo combined for four of the next five goals as Lourdes tied the contest at six with 4:18 remaining before halftime. Bichsel accounted for five of the team's first six markers.
Â
Lawrence Tech found the back of the cage twice in the final 1:02 before intermission though to take an 8-6 lead into the locker room.
Â
The Blue Devils increased the lead to 9-6 early in the third quarter before Bichsel scored with Lourdes short a man to start the comeback. Vowles added a pair of goals but Lourdes still trailed 11-9 late in the third when
Dylan Gill (Holland, Ohio/Saint Francis H.S.) found the back of the cage. Vowles added another tally late in the third to even the game at 11 heading into the final 15 minutes.
Â
Vowles put Lourdes in front with 7:47 left in the contest only to have the hosts respond and even the game 24 seconds later. Vowles fifth of the game with 6:24 remaining proved to be the game winner though as the Gray Wolves defense kept the Blue Devils from a late equalizer.
Â
Joe Hollinger (Maumee, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) made a big save in the final minute, his 17

Â
"Joe came up big in the game," Yannarelli added. "He was the backbone of our defense and showed some great leadership with the number of freshmen we had playing in the back."
