Playing its fifth top-10 ranked opponent this season on Wednesday afternoon, Lourdes University came out on the short end of a 20-11 decision to sixth-ranked Lawrence Tech at the Legacy Center in Brighton, Mich.
Â
The Blue Devils and Gray Wolves traded goals for the first nine minutes of the contest.Â
Alyssa Long (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn H.S.) scored three times during the span for Lourdes. With the game tied at three, Lawrence Tech tallied six unanswered goals to build its advantage.
Â
Faith Fisher (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) ended the Blue Devil run while
Shelby Kellar (Holland, Ohio/Saint Ursula H.S.) and
Mackenzie Moriarty (Roseville, Minn./Roseville H.S.) both found the back of the cage before halftime for the Gray Wolves as well. For Kellar, the tally marked her first collegiate goal.
Â
Lawrence Tech took a 12-6 lead into the intermission before Lourdes struck first in the second half. Fisher tallied her second goal of the contest to pull Lourdes within five, but that would be as close as the Gray Wolves would get the rest of the way.
Â
Lawrence Tech scored six of the next seven goals, with only a tally from Fisher in the run. Fisher and Long each added a fourth goal late in the game for the Gray Wolves while
Katie Cerveny (Erie, Mich./Mason Senior H.S.) also added a goal with Fisher picking up the assist to complete her five-point game.
Â
"We need to do a better job on the fundamentals of possessing the ball and scooping up ground balls," head coach
Paul Sieben said afterwards. "You can't win when they have a 43-28 ground ball edge. We need to reduce our turnovers."
Â
Shelby Linenkugel (Temperance, Mich./Saint Ursula H.S.) led the defense with five ground balls while
Hannah Cullis (Fort Worth, Texas/Central H.S.) and
Kelsey Schiel (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame H.S.) each added four on the afternoon. All three players also caused a turnover in the game.
Â
Kiley Ketteman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson H.S.) made six first half saves in goal while
Margaret Janiga (East Aurora, N.Y./Nichols H.S.) made five stops in the final 30 minutes.
Â
The Blue Devils outshot Lourdes 44-18 for the game, including a 28-8 advantage in the opening 30 minutes.
Â
"The bright side today was that our shooting percentage was outstanding again today," Sieben added. "We just need to take more than 18 shots in a game."
Â
Alyssa Shaver led Lawrence Tech (6-3, 4-3 WHAC) with six goals and an assist while Marie Klonowski made six saves in the cage.
Â
Lourdes (2-6, 0-6) will return to action on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves travel to Fort Wayne, Ind. to battle third-ranked Indiana Tech. The opening draw is slated for 2 p.m. at Warrior Field.
