Lourdes Women Fall to Second-Ranked Davenport

Playing its second nationally-ranked foe within four days, Lourdes suffered a 17-5 setback on Saturday afternoon to second-ranked Davenport at Detroit Country Day school in Grand Rapids, Mich.

"We were more competitive this year than we were last year against Davenport," head coach Paul Sieben said after the game.  "We still have a long way to go with our skill development though.  Possession is key in this game and we did not have the possession needed to win.  They were more aggressive, especially defensively, than any team we have face thus far this year."

Davenport struck quickly, tallying its first goal just 12 seconds into the contest.  Lourdes answered at the 27:31 mark as Faith Fisher (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) scored on a free position shot to tie the game.  The Panthers scored the next five goals before Mackenzie Moriarty (Roseville, Minn./Roseville H.S.) scored the Gray Wolves' second marker with 7:18 remaining before halftime.

The Panthers tallied two more goals before Alyssa Long (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn H.S.) found the back of the cage from the free position.  Davenport added one last goal before halftime, scoring with four seconds remaining to take a 9-3 lead at the break.

The goal just before break was the first of nine straight tallies for Davenport as the Panthers built a 17-3 advantage.  Long ended the run with her team-leading 10th goal of the season for Lourdes with 3:50 remaining while Fisher added her second goal of the game with 1:13 remaining to conclude the scoring for the day.

Davenport (2-0, 1-0 WHAC) outshot Lourdes 38-10 for the game, including a 29-7 advantage on goal.  Kaitlyn Lowden led eight different Panther goal scorers with five goals while Taylor Balch added three goals and an assist.

Kiley Ketteman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson H.S.) made 10 saves in goal for Lourdes while Margaret Janiga (East Aurora, N.Y./Nichols H.S.) made two stops in relief.  Samantha Powers made two saves in the win for Davenport.

Lourdes (0-3, 0-3) will step out of conference play on Wednesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves head to Alma, Mich. to battle Alma.  The opening draw is set for 4 p.m. at Bahlke Field.
