Lourdes Earns Season’s First Win, Downing Alma

Box Score Lourdes University's women's lacrosse team earned its first victory of the 2015 season on Wednesday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves defeated Alma 12-10 at Bahlke Field in Alma, Mich.

The Scots started quick, scoring just 36 seconds into the game before Lourdes responded with three straight goals.  Alyssa Long (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn H.S.) tied the game before Kelsey Schiel (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame H.S.) scored on a free position shot to put the Gray Wolves on top.  Katie Cerveny (Erie, Mich./Mason Senior H.S.) made it 3-1, scoring on the man advantage.

Alma scored a pair of goals to tie the game with just under 15 minutes to play before Lourdes scored three straight goals to regain the advantage.  Long put the Gray Wolves in front before Mackenzie Moriarty (Roseville, Minn./Roseville H.S.) scored back-to-back goals.  The Scots tallied two goals before halftime though, to pull within one, 6-5, at the break.

The hosts scored three of the first four goals in the second half, with Jessie Frost (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.) tallying the lone Lourdes goal during the stretch, and took an 8-7 advantage into the final 15 minutes.  Cerveny tied the game with a free position shot before Long scored two straight tallies, putting the Gray Wolves in front for good.  Haley Brown (Temperance, Mich./Bedford H.S.) tallied her first goal of the year to increase the lead to 11-8 with 11:25 remaining.

Alma found the back of the cage with 4:25 to play only to have Moriarty respond with her third goal of the day.  The Scots added one final goal with under two minutes to play, but Lourdes was able to hold on for the victory.

"We showed a lot of mental toughness and tenacity today," head coach Paul Sieben said after the game.  "We had some nice scoring runs of three and four goals at a time.  We had some nice passing plays to set up goals.  Both of our goalies played well to help in the win."

Kiley Ketteman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson H.S.) started and made two first half saves while Margaret Janiga (East Aurora,N.Y./Nichols H.S.) made one stop over the final 30 minutes.

Tracy Gallihugh and Ashton Street led Alma (1-3) with three goals each.

Lourdes (1-3) was scheduled to travel to Pikeville for a Saturday afternoon contest, but that game has been cancelled due to poor field conditions.  The Gray Wolves are now scheduled to return to action next Wednesday when they travel to Grand Rapids, Mich. to face Davenport.  The opening draw is set for 5 p.m.
