Ashley Yeager's (Toledo, Ohio/Northview H.S.) bases loaded fielder's choice in the bottom of the seventh inning capped Lourdes' three-run rally to earn the Gray Wolves a split of Wednesday's doubleheader with Michigan-Dearborn at Pacesetter Park. The Wolverines won the opener 11-1 before Lourdes rebounded with the 9-8 win.
Â
Michigan-Dearborn (17-17, 7-3 WHAC) struck first in game two with a pair of runs in the top of the first before Lourdes cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning.Â
Hayley Roberts (Brownstown, Mich./Brownstown H.S.) doubled home
Alyssa Schaub (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) with the Gray Wolves' first run.
Â
A three-run second with just one hit put Lourdes in front 4-2. Yeager had a RBI double which plated
Breyahna Guy (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) while
Kayla Encalado (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) and Yeager each scored on wild pitches in the inning.
Â
The Wolverines responded immediately, retaking the lead with three runs in the third and two more in the fourth to build a 7-4 advantage.Â
Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.) made it a one-run game with a two-run double to left-center in the bottom of the fourth.
Â
Michigan-Dearborn tacked on a run in the fifth to increase the lead to 8-6 and the game stayed that way until the seventh. The Wolverines loaded the bases with one out when Alexis Powell flew out to Yeager in center. Yeager threw a strike to the plate to double up Kaylyn Roose trying to tag and score, keeping the Gray Wolves' deficit at two.
Â
"That double play was huge for us," head coach
Jo Ann Gordon said. "It kept the deficit at just two and gave us some momentum coming to the plate. We fought tooth and nail to try to battle back in game two."
Â
Lourdes rallied in the seventh. Mosiniak led off with a single and moved to third on a double by
Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.). With one out,
Hillary West (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) singled home both runners, tying the game.Â
Taylor Tafelski (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg H.S.) pinch hit and was able to reach on an error to move pinch runner
Marche' Venable (Youngstown, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney H.S.) into scoring position. A walk to Encalado loaded the bases before Yeager hit a slow roller to second and the Wolverines' throw to the plate to try to cut down Venable was too late.
Â
Mosniak and Schaub each had two of Lourdes nine hits in game two and the Gray Wolves overcame 14 Michigan-Dearborn hits.
Â
Samantha Shirling (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood H.S.) earned the win (2-3) in relief, allowing just one run in 3.2 innings of work. Abby Jewell suffered the loss (2-3) for the Wolverines, allowing five runs and seven hits in five innings out of the bullpen.
Â
In the opener, Michigan-Dearborn took advantage of a pair of Lourdes errors in the second inning to score six unearned runs and take control of the game.
Â
West doubled home Megyesi with the Gray Wolves' lone run in the fourth inning as the duo each went 2-for-2 in the game, accounting for all four of Lourdes hits in the contest.
Â
Jessie Thueme went 2-for-4 with a home run and four runs batted in in the opener to pace the Wolverines. Her two-run blast came as part of a four-run sixth inning.
Â
Kayla Goodwin went the distance for the win (5-3) in the circle, allowing just the one run and four hits.Â
Brooke Gallaher (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) suffered the loss (2-5), allowing the six unearned runs in 1.1 innings in the circle to open the game.
Â
Lourdes (6-10, 4-4) will return to action on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves entertain Concordia (Mich.) at Pacesetter Park. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
