Backed by strong pitching, Madonna limited Lourdes to just one run on Saturday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader from the Gray Wolves 7-0 and 2-1 at Mercy Field.
Â
In the opener Evan Piechota limited Lourdes to just six hits and one walk while striking out 10 on his way to the complete game win (6-1).Â
Â
Madonna struck for four runs on five hits in the third inning before adding a run in the eighth and two more in the ninth.
Â
Andy Kefalos (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.) and
Marty Ramirez (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) each tallied two hits for the Gray Wolves in the loss.
Â
A.J. Schraffenberger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick H.S.) suffered the loss (1-2), surrendering five runs and nine hits in 7.2 innings on the hill.
Â
Lourdes scored first in game two as
Garret Jex (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.) singled in the opening inning, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Kefalos' two-out double to center.
Â
Matt Olsavsky (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) went the distance for the Gray Wolves on the mound while taking the loss (0-3), allowing just six hits on the afternoon while striking out six. He kept the Crusaders off of the scoreboard until the sixth when John Lauro tallied his second hit of the game, a two-run single which provided all of the offense Madonna (33-11, 23-4 WHAC) needed on the day.
Â
Jex had two hits in game two as Lourdes managed just three hits in the nightcap. Alex DeYonker earned the win (5-2), striking out five in six innings while Bobby St. Pierre earned his ninth save.
Â
Lourdes (9-30, 5-20) will continue its 12-game homestand on Tuesday afternoon, stepping out of conference play to face Grace. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
