Lourdes closed a six-goal deficit to two late in Saturday's game, but were unable to pull any closer, falling 15-13 to Aquinas at Central Catholic High School.
"It was a game of runs and they stopped our last one," head coach
Patrick Yannarelli said afterwards. "Their goalie was great and our shot selection was poor. Their ofense created slides and we did not communicate effectively on defense and gave up unconstested shots."
Lourdes took a 4-2 lead after two quarters behind a pair of goals from both
Casey Hilfinger (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) and
Trent Hasenfratz (Maumee, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.). A
Stephen Wade (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) goal early in the second made it 5-2 Lourdes before the Saints responded with a 6-1 run to take the lead.
Jared Yoshino (Toledo, Ohio/Southview H.S.) and
Shannen Wesley (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis H.S.) each had goals before halftime as Lourdes trailed 9-7 at the break.
Dylan Gill (Holland, Ohio/Saint Francis H.S.) accounted for Lourdes' lone goal in the third as Aquinas (6-5) increased the lead to 13-8, and the Saints led 14-8 before Lourdes began rally.
Hasenfratz and
Danny Bichsel (Westerville, Ohio/North H.S.) each scored early in the four while Gill, Bichsel, and Wesley all scored in the final three minutes as the Gray Wolves made their late run.
Joe Hollinger (Maumee, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) made eight saves in goal for the Gray Wolves.
Lourdes (4-6) is scheduled to close the regular season on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves host Indiana Tech. The opening faceoff is set for 6 p.m. at Pacesetter Park.
