First Place Madonna Takes Two from Lourdes

Lourdes faced first place Madonna on Sunday afternoon, dropping both ends of a doubleheader at University Field in Livonia, Mich. by scores of 7-1 and 7-3.

Madonna struck first with four runs in the opening inning of game one.  Two singles and two doubles from the first four batters combined with a sacrifice fly to put the Crusaders on top.  A triple followed by a ground out in the third inning increased the hosts lead to 5-0.

Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) put Lourdes on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning, blasting a solo home run into the wind in left-centerfield. For the junior it was her second round-tripper of the season and 12th of her career.

The Crusaders tacked on a two-out run in the bottom of the fourth to rebuild their five-run advantage before adding another single run in the fifth.

Megyesi went 3-for-3 at the plate in the opener while Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.) had two hits as the duo accounted for all five of Lourdes hits in the opener.

Mikey Kish led Madonna at the plate going 3-for-4 with a double and a triple while Emma Cook drove home two runs.

Bree Crampton earned the win (14-6) in the circle, striking out six in the complete game effort.  Samantha Shirling (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood H.S.) suffered the loss (2-4), allowing 10 hits while striking out three.

It was a similar start for Madonna in game two as the Crusaders again plated four in the bottom of the first inning, taking advantage of four hits and a pair of walks.  The home team added a fifth run in the second inning

Lourdes broke through in the top of the fourth inning.  Alyssa Schaub (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) led off the inning with a single off of pitcher Erin Combs' leg.  She stole second before scoring when the throw went into right-centerfield.  Mosiniak doubled with one out before Hayley Roberts (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) added a RBI double off the top of the leftfield wall to pull the Gray Wolves to within three, 5-2.

Madonna responded with an unearned run in both the fourth and fifth innings to rebuild the five-run advantage.

Roberts tallied her second RBI of the game in the sixth inning, driving home Megyesi, who singled with one out and moved to third when the ball skipped by the right fielder.

Lourdes had chances in both the fifth and seventh innings for added runs, stranding runners on second and third in both innings.

Schaub went 3-for-4 in game two with a pair of stolen bases while Roberts also had two hits as part of Lourdes' nine-hit effort.

Morgan Kaiser, Kish, and Erin Combs all had three hits for Madonna as part of their 14-hit attack in the nightcap.

Combs also earned the win (16-3) in the circle, striking out eight without walking anyone in the complete game effort.  Brooke Gallaher (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) suffered the loss (2-8) dispite her complete game effort as well.

Lourdes (6-14, 4-8) will return to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves travel to Grand Rapids, Mich. to face Cornerstone in a makeup of a March 28 postponement.  First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3:30 p.m.
