Lourdes earned a critical road sweep in the quest to qualify for the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Cornerstone for the first time in program history 10-2 and 15-6 at the Farmers Athletic Complex in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Â
"We put all phases of the game together today," head coach
Jo Ann Gordon said afterwards. "We looked confident at the plate and swung at good pitches. That helped us string hits together."
Â
The Gray Wolves wasted little time jumping on the scoreboard in the opener, plating three runs in the first inning.Â
Hayley Roberts (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) drove home the game's first run with her first of two doubles in the game before Lourdes plated two runs on a
Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) groundout.
Â
After Cornerstone scored a run in the bottom of the first, Lourdes broke the game open in the third with five runs. Roberts had a RBI double while
Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.) scored on a wild pitch.Â
Hillary West (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) delivered the inning's big blow, a three-run home run, her first of the season.
Â
Mosiniak added a two-run round-tripper in the fourth to increase the lead to 10-1 and the Golden Eagles were only able to manage one more run in the bottom of the fourth against
Brooke Gallaher (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.). Gallaher went the distance to earn the victory (3-8), yielding just five hits and one earned run while striking out nine in the circle.
Â
"Brook pitched really well," Gordon added. "She was very effective with her pitches."
Â
Brooke Leonard suffered the loss (7-4), surrendering eight runs and six hits in just two innings of work.
Â
Mosiniak and Roberts both finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI while West went 2-for-3 while driving home the three runs. Gallaher and Mosiniak each scored three times for the Gray Wolves in the opener.
Â
Lourdes struck quickly in game two as well as Roberts delivered her third double of the day to plate Mosiniak with the game's first run in the opening inning.Â
Ashley Yeager (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) tallied a RBI triple in the second to increase the lead to two.
Â
Yeager's second triple of the game started a five-run fourth inning as
Alyssa Schaub (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) singled her home. Gallaher added a RBI double while Roberts drove home another run with a single. West brought home two more runs with a triple down the rightfield line to make it 7-0 Gray Wolves.
Â
After Cornerstone (16-14, 4-10 WHAC) scored a single run in the bottom of the fourth, Lourdes responded with an unearned run in the fifth on a double by Schaub. West added a RBI double in the sixth and
Erica Marvaso (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) added a pinch-hit run-scoring single to increase the advantage to 10-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth inning.
Â
The Golden Eagles kept the game alive with four runs in the bottom of the sixth, three on a home run by Jessica Wright, only to see Lourdes respond with five runs in the top of the seventh to secure the win. Mosiniak hit a three-run home run while West tacked on a RBI single and
Breyahna Guy (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) added a run-scoring groundout.
Â
West finished the game 4-for-4 with four runs batted in while Schaub had three hits. Mosiniak drove home three runs as Lourdes tallied 17 hits in the contest.
Â
Gallaher earned her second win (4-8) of the day in the circle, allowing four runs and four hits in 5.1 innings of work. Rachel Nelson suffered the loss (3-6), surrendering seven runs and nine hits in 3.2 innings of work.
Â
"These games give us a great deal of momentum heading into this weekend," Gordon concluded.
Â
Lourdes (8-14, 6-8) will return home to Pacesetter Park on Friday afternoon as the Gray Wolves entertain 24
th-ranked Davenport. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 3 p.m.
