Photo GalleryLourdes closed out the 2015 regular season on Sunday afternoon, splitting a pair of games with Aquinas at Pacesetter Park on Senior Day. The Gray Wolves won the opener 4-3 before falling in game two 4-1 to the Saints.
Â
The Gray Wolves jumped on top in the opening inning of game one, loading the bases in the first inning after the first three batters. A sacrifice fly by
Hayley Roberts (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) plated
Alyssa Schaub (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) with the game's first run.Â
Â
Lourdes added to its lead in the fourth as Schaub reached on a two-out error, allowing
Breyahna Guy (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) to score.
Â
Aquinas battled back, tying the game at two with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The Gray Wolves immediately responded in their half of the sixth as
Kayla Encalado (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) reached via an error and scored on
Ashley Yeager's (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) second home run of the season to deep left.
Â
The Saints added a run in the seventh, but
Brooke Gallaher (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) finished off her complete game victory (5-10), stranding the potential tying run at second base.
Â
Gallaher walked three and allowed nine hits but struck out six. Erika Whittington suffered the loss (7-12), surrendering just one earned run and eight hits while also going the distance.
Â
Jaime Newman (Edgerton, Ohio/Edgerton H.S.) was the lone Gray Wolf to tally two hits in the contest.
Â
Aquinas (21-21, 7-11 WHAC) scored three runs in the top of the first inning in game two and that was more than enough for the Saints to register a split in the doubleheader.Â
Â
Lourdes tallied one run in the bottom of the first on a RBI single by
Erica Marvaso (Huron Township, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.), scoring
Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Edgerton H.S.). The Gray Wolves would manage just four hits in game two and were unable to take advantage of five walks, stranding eight base runners.
Â
The Saints added an insurance run in the fifth to close out the scoring.
Â
Caitlyn Hensel earned the win (8-5) in the circle, going the distance while striking out five. Gallaher suffered the loss (5-11), pitching just the opening inning.
Â
Lourdes (7-19, 7-11) will head to Rockford, Mich. on Wednesday evening to begin play in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament. Action will begin at 6 p.m. at Art Van Sports Complex. The Gray Wolves opponent and tournament pairings will be announced by the WHAC office early in the week.
