Lourdes Softball Extends Season at WHAC Tournament

After dropping the opening game of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament to 23rd-ranked Davenport 13-5 on Wednesday evening, Lourdes rebounded to defeat Concordia (Mich.) 3-2 in an elimination game at Art Van Sports Complex in Rockford, Mich.

Davenport (37-8), the tournament's second seed, jumped on top early with five runs in the opening inning before adding seven more in the third to build a 12-0 lead over the Gray Wolves.

Lourdes' bats came to life in the fourth inning, as the Gray Wolves scored four times before recording an out.  Jaime Newman (Edgerton, Ohio/Edgerton H.S.) led off with a single before Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.) followed with one of her own.  Hayley Roberts (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) delivered a RBI single to plate Newman before Bre Megyesi's (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) loaded the bases.  Mosiniak stole home on a failed pickoff attempt of Roberts at second base before Erica Marvaso (Huron Township, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) came through with a two-run double to make it 12-4.

Newman reached on a bunt single with one out in the fifth as Lourdes again loaded the bases.  Megyesi singled Newman home to pull the Gray Wolves within seven.

KC Dunne led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a home run to center though to end the game.

Mosiniak finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate while Megyesi and Newman each added two hits as part of Lourdes nine-hit attack.

Alyssa Eastman earned the win (16-4) in relief for the Panthers, despite allowing five runs and eight hits in her two innings of work.  Samantha Shirling (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood H.S.) took the loss (2-5), surrendering 12 runs, nine of which were earned, in 2.2 innings.

Facing elimination in game two against third-seeded Concordia, the seventh-seeded Gray Wolves broke through first in the third inning. Kayla Encalado (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) led off the frame with a triple and scored one batter later on a sacrifice fly by Ashley Yeager (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.).

The Gray Wolves added to the lead in the fifth as Mosiniak doubled to deep center with one out and moved to third on a wild pitch.  With two outs, Megyesi delivered a run-scoring single.  After stealing second, Megyesi came around to score with Marvaso reached on a Cardinal error.

Concordia (19-15) cut the Lourdes advantage to one with a pair of runs in the sixth inning and the Cardinals put the potential tying run on second base in the seventh.  Brooke Gallaher (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) induced a sharp lineout to left to end the game, giving the Gray Wolves their first WHAC tournament victory in program history.

Gallaher earned the win (6-11), allowing just five hits in the complete game effort.  She struck out four and worked around five walks.  Corrina Rotondo suffered the loss (9-7) for Concordia, giving up two earned runs and 10 hits in her complete game outing.

Alyssa Schaub (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.), Mosiniak, and Yeager each had two hits in the game for the Gray Wolves.

Lourdes (10-18) will return to the diamond on Thursday afternoon as the Gray Wolves face eighth-seeded Siena Heights in another elimination game.  First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at the Art Van Sports Complex.  Should the Gray Wolves win, they would advance to a 4:30 p.m. contest against the winner of top-seeded Madonna and sixth-seeded Aquinas.  With two wins the Gray Wolves would also play a 7 p.m. contest on Thursday.
