After several postponements due to weather, Lourdes returned to the diamond on Monday afternoon, but dropped both games of a doubleheader to Adrian 7-5 and 6-5 at the AC Softball Field in Adrian, Mich.
Â
The Bulldogs pounded out 25 hits, including 11 extra base hits, on the afternoon to counteract 18 hits from the Gray Wolves.
Â
"Our offense did a good job today, but we couldn't hold their sticks down," head coach
Jo Ann Gordon said afterwards. "We gave up too many extra base hits. We'd get a lead but they always seemed to have an answer."
Â
In the opener Lourdes jumped on top with a pair of runs in the first inning.Â
Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) singled home
Alyssa Schaub (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) two batters into the game and eventually scored herself on a ground out by
Hayley Roberts (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.).
Â
Adrian cut the Gray Wolf lead in half with a run in the bottom of the frame before taking the lead with a pair of runs in the second.
Â
Lourdes responded in the third as Schaub doubled and scored on a single by Megyesi to tie the game at three. Two batters later, Roberts hit a blast to left-center for her second home run of the season, putting the Gray Wolves on top 5-3.
Â
The Bulldogs tied the game with a two-out double in the bottom of the fourth before plating an unearned run in the fifth to take the lead. Adrian added an insurance run in the sixth to secure the win.
Â
Roberts, Megyesi, and
Erica Marvaso (Huron Township, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) had two hits each for Lourdes, which managed seven safeties for the game. Taylor Van't Land went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in while Morgan Brandt added three hits as part of Adrian's 15-hit attack.
Â
Kelsey Meyer earned the win (4-3) with four innings of scoreless relief for the Bulldogs while
Brooke Gallaher (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) suffered the loss (1-2) for Lourdes.
Â
The Gray Wolves scored in the opening inning of game two as well. Schaub led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a single by
Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.). Schaub's second home run of the season to left with one out in the third make it 2-0 Lourdes.
Â
Adrian responded with three runs in the third to take the lead before a pair of fourth inning doubles increased the advantage to 4-2.
Â
Lourdes retook the lead in the fifth as
Kayla Encalado (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) led off with a single and Schaub followed with a walk. Mosiniak singled home Encalado with one out before Marvaso added a two-run, two-out single to put Lourdes on top 5-4.
Â
The Gray Wolves maintained the lead until the bottom of the seventh when Karissa DeVore hit a game-winning, two-run home run to right, giving Adrian (15-9) the walk-off victory.
Â
Schaub went 3-for-3 with a walk to pace Lourdes 11-hit attack while Mosiniak and Marvaso each had a pair of hits.
Â
Payge Reed earned the win (3-0) after pitching a scoreless inning of relief for the Bulldogs while
Samantha Shirling (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood H.S.) suffered the loss (0-2), tossing the final four innings for Lourdes.
Â
Lourdes is scheduled to play another non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon, traveling to face Hillsdale. First pitch in game one is set for 4 p.m. at Johnny Williams Field in Hillsdale, Mich.
