Siena Heights Spoils Lourdes Senior Night with Second Half Rally

Lourdes honored its first senior in program history on Tuesday evening but Siena Heights spoiled the celebration, rallying from a halftime deficit to defeat the Gray Wolves 12-9 at O'Laughlin Stadium in Adrian, Mich.

Kristi Layman (Toledo, Ohio/Northview H.S.) was honored prior to the game for her two years with the Lourdes program.

Once the game commenced, the Gray Wolves battled with the fifth-ranked Saints throughout the first half.  Faith Fisher (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) put Lourdes on top with the first goal of the game 6:50 into the contest.

Siena Heights tied the game at the 16:14 mark, and the game stayed knotted at one until a flurry of goals in the final five minutes of the opening half.  Jessie Frost (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.) gave Lourdes the lead with 4:43 remaining before halftime while Alyssa Long (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn H.S.) increased the lead to 3-1 just 50 seconds later.

After the Saints cut the Lourdes lead in half, Fisher responded at the 2:29 mark.  Siena Heights tied the game at four with two goals just 42 seconds apart, but Frost's second tally of the game with just 28 seconds remaining in the opening stanza put the Gray Wolves in front 5-4 at the break.

"The first half was the best half of lacrosse we have played since the program started," head coach Paul Sieben said afterwards.  We played a well-rounded game, but unfortunately, in the end we came up just short against another ranked opponent."

Siena Heights took the lead with the first two goals of the second half, but Lourdes had answers.  Katie Cerveny (Erie, Mich./Mason Senior H.S.) tied the game at six and Long's free position goal put the Gray Wolves on top at the 17:59 mark.

The Saints again responded with a pair of goals to retake the lead before Long retied the game at eight with 12:23 to play.

Three straight goals by the hosts proved to be the difference though, as the Saints took an 11-8 advantage into the final minutes.  Long added her fourth tally of the game, and 40th of the season, with 2:24 to play before Siena Heights tacked on one final goal at the 1:14 mark.

Erin Kehn led Siena Heights (8-3, 4-3 WHAC) with four goals while Sabrina Snow and Aliisa Mason added three tallies each.

The Saints outshot Lourdes by a narrow 26-24 margin for the contest but Lourdes had a 15-10 edge in ground balls.

"We had a good ground ball performance today," Sieben added.  We also reduced our turnovers from where they have been."

Long led the Gray Wolves with six ground balls while Frost collected a team-high five draw controls.

Margaret Janiga (East Aurora, N.Y./Nichols H.S.) made nine saves in goal for Lourdes while Tabitha Ferguson made 10 stops for the Saints.

Lourdes (3-9, 0-9) will close out WHAC play on Wednesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves travel to Grand Rapids, Mich. to face Aquinas.  The opening draw is set for 5 p.m. at the Aquinas Athletic Field.
