Lourdes closed out the 2015 campaign on Saturday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader with Marygrove at Ilitch Ballpark in Livonia, Mich. The Gray Wolves won the opener 11-4 before falling 2-1 in extra innings in the nightcap.
Â
The Gray Wolves bats were hot in the opener, as Lourdes pounded out 13 hits.Â
Garrett Jex (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.) started the scoring in the opening inning with a two-run triple to straightaway centerfield.Â
Â
Nick Mazgay's (Centerburg, Ohio/Centerburg H.S.) RBI single started a four-run fourth inning, which was capped with a bases loaded double by
Andy Kefalos (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.), plating all three runners.
Â
Jex, who finished the game a double shy of the cycle, led off the fifth inning with his first home run of the season to increase the Gray Wolves' lead to 7-0.
Â
RBI singles by both
Marty Ramirez (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) and Jex in the sixth inning allowed Lourdes to build a 9-0 lead before Marygrove scored a single run in the sixth and three more in the seventh.
Â
Nick Toth (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson H.S.) and
Tyler Trame (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) each chipped in run-scoring singles in the eighth inning to close out the scoring.
Â
Frank Shaffer (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.), making his final collegiate start, earned the win (1-6), scattering 11 hits in 6.1 innings of work. He did not walk anyone while striking out two and allowing our runs, three of which were earned.
Â
Jon Weatherspoon suffered the loss (0-8), allowing six runs and four hits in four innings, walking four and fanning one. David Chung went 4-for-5 with two runs batted in to lead the Mustangs.
Â
In game two, Lourdes started seniors at every position but on the mound, with six pitchers playing defensive positions and batting. In what turned out to be a pitcher's duel, James Edwards for Marygrove and Lourdes'
Matt Olsavsky (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) matched zeros on the scoreboard through the scheduled seven innings.
Â
Lourdes broke through in the top of the ninth as
Jonathan Barker (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.), a pinch hitter, scored on a Mustang fielding error to give the Gray Wolves the lead.
Â
Marygrove (4-43, 3-33 WHAC) responded in the bottom of the ninth though, putting two runners aboard, at second and third, for the first time in the game. After an intentional walk loaded the bases with one out, Kyle Hartwick delivered a two-run game-winning single.
Â
Edwards earned the win (2-5), tossing a nine-inning complete game, allowing one unearned run on five hits while striking out two. Olsavsky suffered the loss (0-5) for Lourdes (14-36, 8-25), striking out seven and scattering six hits while going the distance as well.
