After scoring just two goals in its first three matches, Lourdes found the back of the net three times on Tuesday afternoon on the way to a 3-1 victory over Purdue Calumet at Dowling Park in Hammond, Ind.
Â
"This was a solid weekday win for us on the road," head coach
Jackie Donovan said after the victory. "We started slow but the girls worked through it and got the result. I am very proud of our younger players who are embracing our system and style."
Â
The host Peregrines jumped on top with a goal from Rachel Gregory just 9:14 into the match. Lourdes responded just over three minutes later as
Jada Foster (Lenox Township, Mich./Anchor Bay H.S.) found the upper corner of the goal with
Remy Houttekier (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Andover H.S.) earning the assist.
Â
Foster broke the 1-1 tie with 1:30 to play before intermission, taking a cross from
Nichole Miller (Findlay, Ohio/Van Buren H.S.) and beating goalkeeper Kelley Sharp to put the Gray Wolves on top 2-1 at the break. For Miler, it was her first collegiate point.
Â
Miller assisted on Lourdes insurance goal 2:54 into the second half, taking the ball to the end line and playing it across to
Kendyl Christian (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.), who found the back of the net. Christian's goal was the first for a Gray Wolf other than Foster this season.
Â
Purdue Calumet (1-4-1) outshot Lourdes 14-13 for the match and held a 10-7 advantage on goal, but
Erika Brinkman (Kalida, Ohio/Kalida H.S.) made nine saves between the posts to earn the victory against her former team. Sharp made four stops for the Peregrines in the setback.
Â
Lourdes (2-1-1) will look for its third straight victory on Saturday evening as the Gray Wolves return home to face Taylor. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
