Photo GalleryPlaying at Wildcat Stadium for the first time in program history, Lourdes suffered a 4-3 setback to Walsh on a warm, humid, wet, yet sunny Saturday afternoon.
Â
"I thought we played pretty well," head coach
Barry Spitzer stated afterwards. "We are a young team and we need to work on game management."
Â
The Gray Wolves wasted little time lighting up the scoreboard as
Jake Kirchoff-Sleet (Tamworth, England/Queen Elizabeth's Mercian H.S.) scored from the middle of the box off of a cross from
Judah Goodridge (Brooklyn, N.Y./Dutchtown H.S.) just 1:24 into the contest.
Â
Jordan Prescod tied the match at the 16:18 mark heading home a corner kick from Ryan Baker. Lourdes responded just 3:22 later though as Goodridge found the back of the net with
Aaron Davis (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg H.S.) drawing the assist, his first collegiate point.
Â
Kirchoff-Sleet made it 3-1 Lourdes at the 31:59 mark, converting a penalty kick for his third goal of the season. The Cavaliers pulled to within one with just 21 seconds to play before intermission though, as Baker converted a penalty shot of his own.
Â
Lourdes outshot Walsh 12-4 in the opening stanza while maintaining the 3-2 lead at the break.
Â
Bailey Moody tied the match at three with 10:25 to play, taking a feed from Dillon Parsons. Walsh would find itself shorthanded the final 8:35 following a red card, but still managed to score the match winner as Lucas Dunlap headed home Michael Saddler's free kick with just 3:39 to play to give the visitors the victory.
Â
"I thought our start was great," Spitzer added. "Things that we worked on in practice we executed well early. We defended well, attacked well, and stuck to our game plan. However, we were not able to keep that plan working late in the match."
Â
Mark Darling (Jacksonville, Fla./Mandarin H.S.) made three saves in goal for the Gray Wolves on the afternoon while Jon-Paul Della Pia made two first half stops for Walsh (1-0). Tom Jackson played the entire second half, but was not forced to make a stop.
Â
Lourdes finished with a slim 14-13 shot advantage on the afternoon, but the Cavaliers had an 8-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Â
Lourdes (1-1) will return to action on Wednesday evening, traveling to Cincinnati Christian. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at the XU Soccer Complex on the campus of Xavier University.
