Cornerstone Upsets No. 9 Lourdes to End 37-Match WHAC Win Streak

Ninth-ranked Lourdes had its 37-match regular season Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference win streak snapped on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves dropped a 21-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-22 match to Cornerstone at Mol Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The Gray Wolves remain one-half game in front of the Golden Eagles in the WHAC Western Division standings despite the loss.

"We made too many errors to win tonight," head coach Greg Reitz said after the match.  "We battled at times, but not the whole night.  Cornerstone played a strong match."

Ave Stout (Huntertown, Ind./Bishop Luers H.S.) slammed down 18 kills and hit .457 on the evening while Molly Shonk (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Hartley H.S.), Stephanie Ruffing (Columbus, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty H.S.), and Meghan Birr (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores H.S.) each tallied double-doubles.  Shonk had 16 kills and 13 digs while Ruffing recorded 16 kills and 10 digs.  Birr handed out 44 assists and registered 13 digs.

After hitting .314 as a team in the opening set, in which the Gray Wolves were victorious, Lourdes did not hit above .178 in a set the rest of the way, and finished the match hitting .173.  Cornerstone outblocked the Gray Wolves 14-3 for the night.

Angelica Dippold (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) led the Gray Wolves with 17 digs while Carolyn Manley (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) added 16 more.  Lourdes outdug the Golden Eagles 76-63.

Heather Green led Cornerstone (27-7, 13-1 WHAC) with 20 kills while Kendra Zwart added 13 kills, hit .480 and was involved in 11 blocks.  Mackenzie Vallad had a match-high 21 digs for the Golden Eagles.

Lourdes (20-4, 14-1) heads to Georgetown, Ky. this weekend for the Boneyard Brawl.  The Gray Wolves face 25th-ranked Columbia (Mo.) at 1 p.m. on Friday and Taylor at 7 p.m. that evening on the first day of play at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym.
