In a match that was tied at halftime, Concordia (Mich.) struck for the only tally of the second half on Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals defeated Lourdes 2-1 in the Gray Wolves' season finale at Cardinal Field in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Â
"It's tough to battle back from behind," head coach
Barry Spitzer said afterwards. "We were able to tie it once, but not the second time. We played well at times and created chances. We were just unable to find the final pass."
Â
Concordia (7-11, 2-9 WHAC) struck first just under 12 minutes into the match as Alex Vrzovski tallied an unassisted goal.
Â
The Gray Wolves responded at the 20:20 mark on a free kick. From near the corner,
Carlos Viganoni (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Western H.S.) played the ball back to
Tyler Rogers (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach H.S.), who found the back of the net far post from 25 yards out. For Rogers it was his second goal in as many matches.
Â
The match remained tied into the break, with Concordia holding a slim 9-8 shot advantage. The Gray Wolves would outshoot the Cardinals 11-3 over the final 45 minutes, but it was the hosts that would score the only goal, which proved to be the match-winner. With 30:36 remaining, Jeff Thomas scored with Vrzovski earning the assist.
Â
Lourdes (6-9-1, 1-9-1) finished with an 11-6 edge in shots on goal, but Marino Moraccini made 10 saves to help lead the Cardinals to victory.Â
Andre White (Montego Bay, Jamaica/Cornwall College) made four stops for the Gray Wolves. Lourdes also had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks in the match.
