Lourdes wrapped up the fall portion of the baseball schedule on Sunday afternoon, suffering a 5-2 setback to Marygrove at Jimmy Johns Field in Utica, Mich.
The Gray Wolves tallied 10 hits in the contest, and had at least one hit in every inning, but stranded 14 runners on base in the game.
"You can't win of you don't score, and you can't score if you don't drive in runs," head coach
Jeremy Snow said afterwards. "I thought we played good defense all fall and pitched fairly well. We have a lot to learn in the offseason though, and the players need to keep their heads up."
Lourdes took the lead in the top of the third with an unearned run.
Mike Vomastek (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson H.S.) reached on an error to lead off the inning. After
Jay Denman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) doubled to put two runners in scoring position,
George Pastor (Walled Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Central H.S.) grounded out to plate the game's first run.
Marygrove answered in the fifth as William DaCosta hit a two-run home run to rightfield, putting the Mustangs on top 2-1. The Mustangs added to their lead in the seventh, as back-to-back singles followed by a ground-rule double by Raleigh Wilson and a sacrifice fly by Antonio Carta made it 4-1.
The Gray Wolves loaded the bases with a
Jonathan Barker (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) single and two walks in the eighth inning. A third walk in the inning to Pastor plated Lourdes second run, cutting the deficit to two.
The Mustangs responded with another insurance run in the eighth as Wilson's infield single pushed the host's lead to 5-2, for the game's final margin.
Barker had three hits while Denman and
Dallas Riggs (Prescott, Ariz./Paradise Valley H.S.) had two hits each for the Gray Wolves. Wilson went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead Marygrove (4-4, 4-4 WHAC).
Daniel Bailey earned the win (1-1) for Marygrove on the hill, working seven innings. He allowed just one unearned run and eight hits while striking out four.
Ben Richard (Maumee, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) suffered the loss (0-1), allowing two runs and four hits while fanning six in five innigs.
"Ben pitched a good game today," Snow said.
Lourdes (1-7, 1-7) will have five months off before returning to action on March 3 at Cumberland. Game time has yet to be determined at Woody Hunt Stadium in Lebanon, Ky.
