Lourdes snapped a six-game losing skid on Saturday afternoon, and in the process picked up its first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference victory of the season at the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center, defeating Michigan-Dearborn 68-64.
Â
"We showed tremendous grown with this win," head coach
Josh Gibson said afterwards. "We only had eight healthy guys and everyone found a way to contribute. I'm happier with our defensive intensity compared to where we have been. Our goal was to hold them to 65 points or less and we held them to 64."
Â
The Gray Wolves started quick, tallying the game's first seven points less than two minutes into the contest. The Wolverines responded with a 14-2 run of their own to build a five-point advantage, and eventually grew their lead to eight, 23-15, midway through the stanza.
Â
Lourdes battled back with a 15-2 run of its own, and led by six, 34-28, with a minute to play before Michigan-Dearborn scored the final five points before intermission to pull within one at the break.
Â
The Wolverines took the lead 43-41, with 14:28 to play only to have Lourdes answer with a triple from
Najeeb Johnson (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights H.S.). Michigan-Dearborn would lead two more times, but only by one point each, with Lourdes answering each bucket.Â
Â
Back-to-back triples by Johnson pushed the lead to 58-51 with just under seven minutes to play and Lourdes would eventually build a nine-point edge, 62-53, with under five minutes remaining.
Â
The Wolverines chipped away, closing to within two, 66-64, with 37 seconds to play and forced a Lourdes miss, but
Evan Vasquez (Delta, Ohio/Delta H.S.) grabbed the offensive board and sealed the game with a pair of free throws.
Â
Johnson led Lourdes with 18 points and seven rebounds while
Levert Bristol (Dothan, Ala./Northview H.S.) added 16 points and six caroms, tallying 8-of-11 from the floor.Â
Hamish Abbott (Melbourne, Australia/Rowville Secondary H.S.) and Vasquez each added nine points.
Â
Lourdes shot 56% from the floor, including 60.9% over the final 20 minutes.
Â
Cody Kegley led Michigan-Dearborn (5-3, 1-1 WHAC) with 18 points off of the bench, making 7-of-8 shots from the floor, including 4-of-5 from three-point range.
Â
Lourdes (2-6, 1-1) will head to Ann Arbor, Mich. on Tuesday evening to battle Concordia (Mich.). Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. at Cardinal Fieldhouse.
