Gray Wolves Fall in Overtime to Indiana Tech

Najeeb Johnson's (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights H.S.) three-pointer forced overtime on Saturday, but Lourdes came up two points shy in the extra session, falling to Indiana Tech 67-65 at the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.

"I was pleased with how we competed today," head coach Josh Gibson said.  "Tough losses like this and the Madonna game can either make or break your season.  If we can become motivated from this, we can still reach our goals."

Lourdes jumped out to a 14-point lead in the first half, 27-13, less than 13 minutes into the contest.  The Warriors responded with seven straight points but the Gray Wolves took a 33-25 lead into the locker room behind 50% shooting from the floor, including 4-of-9 (44.4%) from three-point range.

"We did a great job executing our defensive game plan in the first half," Gibson added.

Indiana Tech (8-4, 5-2 WHAC) scored the first seven points of the second half to close to within one, and had a chance to take the lead, but Lourdes forced a turnover and Johnson tallied the first of his 13 second half points to stem the rally.

Lourdes pushed the lead back to seven before an 8-0 run by the Warriors put the visitors in front for the first time in the game, 44-43, with 8:14 to play.  Johnson immediately answered with a triple, regaining the lead for Lourdes, an advantage the Gray Wolves would hold until the final three minutes.

Tanner Watkins drained a three with 2:49 remaining to put Indiana Tech in front 52-50, and the teams traded layups on their ensuing possessions.  Up two down the stretch, the Warriors split free throws with 26 seconds to play before Johnson hit his triple at the top of the key with 10.8 seconds remaining.  The Warriors final attempt was blocked as time expired, forcing overtime.

A basket by Levert Bristol (Dothan, Ala./Northview H.S.) with 3:45 remaining in overtime put Lourdes in front by three, but Watkins made another three to tie the game and a free throw one possession later put the Warriors in front.  Johnson scored on a lay in with 1:40 left giving Lourdes its final lead of the game.

The Warriors would score the next six points before Evan Vasquez (Delta, Ohio/Delta H.S.) banked home a three with 1.8 seconds remaining and was fouled to pull Lourdes within two, 67-65.  Vasquez intentionally missed the free throw, got his own rebound, but his last second attempt was blocked.

Bristol tallied a double-double for Lourdes with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Johnson also added 15 points.  Malik Thurman (Dayton, Ohio/Stebbins H.S.) added 11 points for the Gray Wolves.

Miles Robinson led Indiana Tech with 19 points while Tanner Watkins added 16 more.

Lourdes (2-11, 1-6) will remain at home on Monday evening, hosting 14th-ranked Rochester (Mich.) in non-conference action.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
