Lourdes managed just four hits over two games on Tuesday morning as the Gray Wolves dropped both ends of a doubleheader 9-1 and 5-0 to Point Park at Lake Myrtle in Auburndale, Fla.
Â
"The bats have been cold for the first couple of games," head coach
Jeremy Snow said afterwards. Â "Today we played much better defense and our pitchers worked ahead in the counts, except in a few innings. Â We just need to relax and play baseball and good things will happen. Â Give credit to Point Park, they've got a strong club. Â But we are better than how we've played so far. Â It is a long season and we just need to take it one game at a time."
Â
Point Park (4-6) jumped on top early in the opener, plating five runs in the top of the first inning. Lourdes tallied its lone run of the day in the second as
Nick Toth (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson H.S.) tallied his fourth double of the season and scored one batter later on
George Pastor's (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.) RBI single.
Â
The Pioneers added three runs in the fourth and a single tally in the sixth while tallying 13 hits in the game. Point Park also took advantage of 10 walks from Gray Wolf pitching and four Lourdes errors defensively.
Â
Kyle Sherman (Collierville, Tenn./Rossville Christian Academy) tallied the only other hit in the game for Lourdes, a two-out single in the sixth.
Â
Logan Linder and Edwin Covas led Point Park at the plate. Both were 3-for-5 with Linder driving home three runs and Covas scoring twice.
Â
Lyle Howard earned the complete game victory, striking out five without walking anyone.Â
Zack Zsolcsak (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) suffered the loss (0-1), allowing eight runs, five of which were earned, and eight hits in 3.1 innings on the hill. He walked six and struck out three.
Â
In game two the Pioneers scored once in the first and four more times in the third to account for all of the scoring.
Â
Paul Avila (Nogales, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro H.S.) suffered the loss (0-1) in a complete game effort for Lourdes, allowing nine hits and two walks while striking out five. Ben Jarboe tossed a complete game one-hitter, walking two and fanning 13 for Point Park.
Â
Sherman tallied the lone Gray Wolf hit in the game, a two-out single in the third.
Â
Lourdes (0-4) will face Lyndon State on Wednesday morning. First pitch is set for 10:30 a.m. at Chain O Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Fla.
