Box Score 2 Lourdes opened Tuesday with an 8-5 victory over Mary before its upset bid of 16
th-ranked Southeastern fell victim to a seventh inning rally in a 4-3 loss at Legends Way in Clermont, Fla.
Â
"I am very pleased with how we played today," head coach
Jo Ann Gordon said afterwards. "In game one we hit the ball well and got a strong pitching performance. We need to clean up our defense, which we did in game two. Unfortunately against Southeastern we had a few missed opportunities, but we hit the ball well again and had another solid pitching performance against a really good team."
Â
The Gray Wolves took the lead in the opening inning against Mary as
Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.) doubled home
Olivia Stanton (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland H.S.).Â
Â
The game remained 1-0 until Stanton delivered a RBI double in the fifth and scored on a two-out single by
Hillary West (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.). Lourdes increased the lead to 5-0 in the sixth as
Jaime Newman (Edgerton, Ohio/Edgerton H.S.) scored as the Marauders turned a double play and Stanton added a RBI single, her third hit of the game.
Â
Mary (2-6) tallied a pair of unearned runs in the sixth, taking advantage of two Lourdes miscues, to pull within 5-2. The Gray Wolves added three important insurance runs in the seventh as
Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) delivered a bases clearing double to push the lead to six.
Â
The three tallies in the top of the seventh proved important as Mary scored three times with two outs after taking advantage of another Gray Wolf error for the game's final margin.
Â
Megyesi, Mosiniak, West, and Newman all had two hits to go along with Stanton's three-hit effort as Lourdes tallied 12 safeties in the game.
Â
Brooke Gallaher (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) earned the complete game victory (1-1), scattering seven hits while not allowing an earned run. Taylor Lara suffered the loss (0-2), surrendering the game's first run and three hits in just two innings in the circle. She walked four.
Â
Lourdes looked poised for the upset against the Fire in game two, building a 3-0 lead.Â
Hayley Roberts (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) singled home Mosiniak in the second and scored after
Erica Marvaso (Huron Township, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) beat out an infield hit and the throw got away from the first baseman. Stanton added a RBI single in the third to plate Megyesi.
Â
Southeastern (10-2) tallied single runs in the fourth and fifth before rallying with two runs in the seventh. The Fire scored on a RBI single and a sacrifice fly to take the lead.
Â
Marvaso finished 3-for-3 to lead the nine-hit effort for Lourdes while Cat Maldonado went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in, including the game-tying run, for the Fire.
Â
Lindsie Scholwinski earned the win (7-1) in relief for Southeastern, allowing just one hit and striking out four in 3.1 innings of work.Â
Marissa Kostick (Saint Charles, Mich./Saint Charles H.S.) suffered the loss (1-1) in relief for Lourdes, coming on for
Kloee Cuckler (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.), who earned a no decision after working into the seventh allowing three runs and five hits.
Â
Lourdes (3-3) will return to the diamond on Thursday afternoon in Clermont. The Gray Wolves face Mount Vernon Nazarene at 1 p.m. at Hancock Park before facing Bethel (Ind.) at Legends Way in a 5 p.m. game.
