Upcoming in Gray Wolves Softball: After opening the season with 14 straight games away from home, Lourdes opens the home portion of its 2016 season on Friday afternoon with a doubleheader against Huntington. The twinbill begins a six-game homestand for the Gray Wolves.
Head Coach Jo Ann Gordon: In her fourth season on the Lourdes bench,
Jo Ann Gordon has a 42-78 (.350) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In her 14th season overall as a head softball coach, Gordon has a 194-366 (.346) career mark. She is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes has never met Huntington on the diamond in softball.
Wrapping Up Last Week: After returning from playing 10 games in Florida, the Gray Wolves dropped both ends of a doubleheader last Friday afternoon at Taylor. The Trojans won the opener 7-4 before winning the night cap 3-0.Â
Brooke Gallaher suffered the loss in game one, allowing just four earned runs, while
Megan Mosiniak homered. The Gray Wolves managed just three hits in game two, while two of Taylor's three runs were unearned.
Scouting Huntington: The Foresters enter the week having won four straight games after sweeping a doubleheader against Wright State-Lake last Saturday 13-0 and 4-0. Huntington hosts Grace on Thursday before visiting Lourdes. The Foresters are hitting .303 as a team, led by Marty Harris who is hitting at a .615 clip with four runs batted in. Natalie McGuire is batting .412 while Katie Depew has a team-leading five runs batted in. The pitching staff has a 2.50 earned run average, led by Emily Puterbaugh, who is 1-2 with a 0.74 ERA and opponents are hitting .217 against her.
Schedule Change: Lourdes' scheduled game at Indiana Wesleyan has been moved from Monday (March 21) to Thursday, March 31. The doubleheader will now begin at 4 p.m. at Wildcat Field in Marion, Ind.
Home Openers: Lourdes is also 1-2 all-time in home openers, with March 18 marking the earliest home start in program history. The Gray Wolves fell to Davenport 6-1 in their first home game on April 7, 2013 before downing Northwestern Ohio 2-1 on April 5, 2014. Last year Lourdes fell in game one to Siena Heights 8-6 on April 1.
What a Difference a Year Makes: Lourdes has already played 14 games prior to this weekend's home opener on March 18. Last season, the Gray Wolves did not play their first game of the season until March 20, a neutral site game on turf against Albion. Lourdes played a total of four games prior to April 1 in 2015, and this year is scheduled to have played 24 games by that same date. Â
Offense is Clicking: Lourdes is hitting .318 as a team this season after hitting .313 for the 2015 campaign. The Gray Wolves currently have three players (with more than 25 at bats) hitting better than .400, led by
Jaime Newman who is batting .448.Â
Olivia Stanton is hitting at a .415 clip while
Megan Mosiniak swings the bat with a .409 average.
Adding Power: Megan Mosiniak and
Olivia Stanton have both added power to the Gray Wolf lineup as well this season. Mosiniak is slugging a team-leading .727 with eight doubles and two home runs. The senior has driven home 10 runs as well. Stanton, a redshirt-freshman transfer, is slugging .610 with five doubles and has tallied a team-high 12 RBI.
Freshmen Solid in the Circle: A pair of freshmen have combined for five of the Gray Wolves' six victories this season in the circle, and have the top two earned run averages on the pitching staff.Â
Marissa Kostick is 3-1 with a 0.78 ERA. She has limited the opposition to just a .206 batting average.Â
Kloee Cuckler is 2-1 with a 3.66 ERA.
Errors Have Proved Costly: Defensively, Lourdes has committed 26 errors in 14 games, fielding at a .938 clip. The miscues have led to 30 unearned runs that the opposition has scored. Lourdes pitching has surrendered just 40 earned runs in 88 innings this year, for a 3.18 staff ERA.
Nearing 100 RBI: Bre Megyesi has eight runs batted in this season, giving her 85 for her career at Lourdes. She had a career-high 36 RBI during her sophomore season.
Getting Things Started: Lourdes leadoff hitters are reaching base 48.4% of the time this season.Â
Megan Mosiniak has the best percentage among players leading off four or more times, reaching base in five of her six plate appearances in that role.
