Lourdes opened the 2016 home slate at Pacesetter Park on Friday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader with Huntington. The Gray Wolves dropped the opener 9-1 before rebounding to earn a 4-3 victory in game two against the Foresters.
Â
"It was great to be able to play at home on March 18," head coach
Jo Ann Gordon said afterwards. "After a disappointing game one, it was nice to see the ladies regain their composure and battle back to earn a split today."
Â
Miscues proved costly for Lourdes in game one, as Lourdes committed five errors. Huntington took advantage of two Gray Wolf miscues in each of the first two innings to plate four in the first and three more runs in the second on the way to a 7-0 lead.Â
Â
Huntington added two more runs in the fourth before the Gray Wolves found the scoreboard in the fifth.Â
Taylor Genzman (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a fielding error by the outfielder.Â
Breyahna Guy (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) followed with a RBI single, but Lourdes was unable to score any more runs in the inning to keep the game alive.
Â
Emily O'Leary went 2-for-3 with four runs batted in to lead the Foresters' 10-hit effort. Emily Puterbaugh earned the win (3-2) in the circle, allowing just one run and four hits while striking out four.Â
Samantha Shirling (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood H.S.) suffered the loss (0-3), allowing seven runs, five of which were earned, and six hits in one inning plus.
Â
Lourdes jumped on top quickly in game two. A leadoff error followed by a bunt single by Genzman put two runners aboard.Â
Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.) loaded the bases with another single. After a fielder's choice,
Erica Marvaso (Huron Township, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) doubled home Genzman and Mosiniak. Guy added a RBI ground out, giving Lourdes a 3-0 lead.
Â
Brooke Gallaher (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) kept Huntington off of the scoreboard while giving up just one hit until the fifth when the Foresters plated a pair of runs.
Â
Lourdes added a much needed insurance run in the bottom of the fifth as Genzman singled home Megyesi, giving the Gray Wolves a 4-2 lead. Huntington plated an unearned run in the sixth, but left two runners aboard and Gallaher tossed a scoreless seventh to earn her second win (2-4) of the year.
Â
Gallaher allowed just two earned runs in the complete game effort, scattering four hits. She walked four and struck out four. Ariel Sheets also went the distance for Huntington (6-6), giving up two earned runs and seven hits.
Â
Genzman finished the game 3-for-3 while Marvaso added two hits.
Â
Lourdes (7-9) will continue its homestand on Wednesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host Findlay in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
