Lourdes saw Findlay score in its final at bat in both games on Tuesday evening as the Oilers defeated the Gray Wolves 8-6 in the opener and 5-1 in eight innings in game two at Pacesetter Park.
Â
"We got two strong pitching performances today," head coach
Jo Ann Gordon said afterwards. "We need to get consistent in the other two phases of the game though. I was pleased with how we played strong defense in game two."
Â
The Gray Wolves struck early in game one, scoring five times in the opening inning while batting around the order.Â
Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.) doubled home
Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) with the game's first run and
Haley Roberts (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) followed with a RBI single.Â
Taylor Tafelski (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg H.S.) added a run-scoring single, which plated a second run following a misplay in the outfield.Â
Jaime Newman (Edgerton, Ohio/Edgerton H.S.) plated the fifth run of the frame with a RBI single to left.
Â
Findlay responded in the top of the second with four runs of their own, taking advantage of a Lourdes error for two unearned runs while sending 10 batters to the plate.
Â
Megyesi added to the Lourdes advantage in the fourth with a home run to straightaway center field, her second round-tripper of the season.
Â
Marissa Kostick (Saint Charles, Mich./Saint Charles H.S.) kept the Oilers off the scoreboard again until the seventh, as Findlay stranded the bases loaded three times in the first six innings. In the seventh a lead-off error and a walk allowed the Oilers to put the tying runs on base before a two-run double and a pair of sacrifice flies allowed Findlay to take the lead for good.
Â
Hailey Brown earned the win (4-4) in the circle for Findlay, allowing six runs, five of which were earned, and nine hits in six innings of work. Chelsea McManaway struck out the side in the seventh for her first save of the year. Kostick suffered the loss, going the distance while allowing just four earned runs and 10 hits. She fanned four and walked four.
Â
Megyesi, Mosiniak, and Newman had two hits each for Lourdes as part of a nine-hit effort. Rebecca Harvey went 3-for-4 with two RBI while Meredith Shepherd had two hits and three runs batted in to lead Findlay. The Oilers took advantage of four Gray Wolf errors in the game.
Â
A leadoff triple and a wild pitch allowed Findlay (14-8) to strike first in game two, but that would be the lone run for the Oilers until extra innings.
Â
Lourdes responded in the bottom of the inning as Mosiniak doubled with two outs and
Erica Marvaso (Huron Township, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) singled her home to tie the game.
Â
Brooke Gallaher (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) would allow just three more hits until the eighth while McManaway entered in relief in the bottom of the fourth and allowed just one walk in 4.2 innings. McManaway struck out 12 Gray Wolves to earn the win (9-1).
Â
With the international tiebreaker in effect in the eighth, three straight two-out walks put Findlay ahead and a bases clearing double by Amanda Delmonte gave the Oilers the three run advantage.
Â
Gallaher finished the game allowing just five hits in eight innings but suffered the loss (2-5). She gave up four earned runs and seven walks while also striking out seven hitters.
Â
Marvaso had two of Lourdes four hits in the nightcap.
Â
Lourdes (7-11) will close out its six-game homestand on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves welcome Cleary to Pacesetter Park. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
