Lourdes overcame a four-goal halftime deficit on Saturday afternoon, and used seven fourth quarter goals to defeat Winona State 13-10 at Maxwell Field in Winona, Minn.
"This was a great test for our team," head coach
Patrick Yannarelli said afterwards. "We were down at half and the end of the third, but we kept our composure and the attack group did a great job of getting us back in the game. The midfield dominated faceoffs and the defense stepped up big in key situations. It was a great experience and one we can build off of."
Lourdes jumped on top early, scoring the game's first three goals as
Dylan Gill (Holland, Ohio/Saint Francis H.S.) scored twice and
Tanner Jaramillo (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) tallied goals in a span of 85 seconds.
Winona State (1-3) answered, tying the game before the end of the quarter and then added four more goals in the second. After the seven straight tallies, the Warriors had a 7-3 lead at halftime.
Jaramillo scored his second of the game just 19 seconds out of the locker room to start a 5-0 Lourdes run. When
Danny Bichsel (Westerville, Ohio/North H.S.) and
Casey Hilfinger (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) scored back-to-back just 31 seconds apart early in the fourth, the Gray Wolves retook the lead 8-7.
After the two sides alternated goals and the contest was tied at nine with 9:43 to play, Lourdes scored four of the final five goals to earn the comeback victory.
Dalton Vowles (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's H.S.), Bichsel, and Gill all finished with three goals to pace the offense as Lourdes outshot Winona State 34-30 for the game after being outshot 13-3 in the opening quarter. Vowles also had four assists while Bichsel had three helpers. The Gray Wolves held a 35-14 advantage in ground balls and won 20 of 25 faceoffs in the contest.
Conner Mishler (Lambertville, Mich./Saint John's H.S.) made nine saves in goal to earn the victory for the Gray Wolves.
Calvin Lamb scored three times to lead Winona State offensively.
Lourdes (6-1) will open Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves host Indiana Tech. The opening faceoff is set for 6 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
