Lourdes earned its second doubleheader split with Cleary in as many days on Sunday, as the Gray Wolves won the opener 13-3 before falling 8-2 in game two at Parker Field in Howell, Mich.
Â
"It was a tale of two games," head coach
Jeremy Snow said afterwards. "Our bats were hot in game one, but we couldn't get anything going in game two."
Â
Lourdes tallied 14 hits in the opener and every starter had at least one hit in the contest. The Gray Wolves started the scoring early, as
Nick Toth (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson H.S.) doubled home two runs in the opening inning before
Garrett Jex's (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.) made it 3-0 Lourdes after two.
Â
The Gray Wolves plated two more runs in the third, one on a RBI single by
Alex Samson (Orrville, Ohio/Orrville H.S.) and another on an error after
Zak Laubscher (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.) stole third and scored when the throw went wild.
Â
In the fourth inning the Gray Wolves sent 14 batters to the plate, as every hitter reached base in the frame. Lourdes scored eight times, taking advantage of four Cleary walks, a hit batsman, and two errors. Jex had a two-run double in the inning, one of five Gray Wolf hits in the frame, and Lourdes led 13-0 midway through the contest.
Â
Brandon Holt (Ravenna, Ohio/Ravenna H.S.) was solid on the mound, pitching four innings of four-hit baseball to get the win (2-1). He struck out three without walking anyone.Â
Zack Zsolcsak (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) pitched the final three innings for the save, allowing one Cougar run in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Â
"We got a great start by Holt," Snow added. "Our offense gave him a lot of run support."
Â
Jex went 3-for-5 with three runs batted in while Toth was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Laubscher also had a multi-hit game for the Gray Wolves.
Â
Gunnar Gail suffered the loss for Cleary, allowing nine runs, eight of which were earned, and 10 hits, in 3.1 innings on the hill. Reid Beffrey was the only Cougar with two hits as part of their nine-hit contest.
Â
In game two Cleary (8-13) took the lead with two runs in the opening inning, only to see Lourdes answer with two in the second.Â
Dallas Riggs (Prescott, Ariz./Paradise Valley H.S.) had a RBI groundout and
Adam Dolesh (Richmond, Ind./Seton Catholic H.S.) drove home
Noah Hayes (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek H.S.) with a single.
Â
The Cougars retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second and added two more in the third. Cleary plated two final insurance runs in the sixth to earn the split.
Â
Ryan Schaffer went the distance on the hill for Cleary, allowing eight hits and two walks in the seven innings.Â
Bill Laranga (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee H.S.) suffered the loss (0-3), surrendering six runs and seven hits in three innings.
Â
Dolesh and
George Pastor (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.) each had two hits to lead the Lourdes offense.
Â
Lourdes (4-12) will return home on Thursday afternoon to open Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play as Davenport visits Mercy Field. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
