Photo GalleryLourdes wrapped up a six-game homestand at Pacesetter Park on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Cleary by the scores of 8-4 and 7-5.
Â
"It's great to get the sweep," head coach
Jo Ann Gordon said afterwards. "We swung the bats well, had solid base running, and got two solid pitching performances on the afternoon."
Â
The Gray Wolves wasted little time jumping on the scoreboard in game one as
Taylor Tafelski (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg H.S.) singled home a pair of runs in the opening inning. After the Cougars plated one in the top of the third to cut the lead in half,
Erica Marvaso (Huron Township, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) delivered a squeeze bunt in the bottom of the inning to score
Taylor Genzman (Saint Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview H.S.).
Â
Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) delivered a run-scoring double in the fourth before
Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.) hit her third home run of the season, a three-run shot, to increase the lead to 7-1. Mosiniak added a RBI double in the sixth to give Lourdes a seven-run advantage.
Â
Cleary battled back in the seventh, scoring three times, two of which were unearned and stranded runners on the corners as
Marissa Kostick (Saint Charles, Mich./Saint Charles H.S.) finished the complete game win (4-2). Kostick allowed just two earned runs and 11 hits in the contest while striking out seven.
Â
Megyesi and Genzman both had three hits as part of a 14-hit attack while Mosiniak and
Kayla Encalado (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) added two hits apiece.
Â
Olivia Silvestri went the distance in the circle for Cleary, suffering the loss (2-5). She gave up seven earned runs and the 14 hits while fanning six. Cheyenne Wallace went 3-for-3 for the Cougars in the opener while Sam Adams drove home three runs.
Â
Lourdes started just as quickly in game two, plating three runs in the opening inning. A throwing error allowed the first run to score while Mosiniak added a RBI single and
Hayley Roberts (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) delivered a two-out run-scoring double.
Â
Cleary (6-8) took the lead in the fourth, scoring four times, including a three-run home run by Kaitlin Dormire, only to see the Gray Wolves tie the game in the bottom of the inning. Tafelski's RBI ground out drove home Mosiniak, who led off the inning with a double.
Â
A Megyesi groundout in the fifth put Lourdes in front for good and the Gray Wolves added a pair of unearned runs in the fifth on a two-run, two-out single by
Hillary West (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.).
Â
The Cougars again tried to rally in the seventh, scoring once while stranding the tying runs on base.
Â
"We need to learn to close games out without making them interesting," Gordon added.
Â
Brooke Gallaher (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) went the distance in the circle to earn the win (3-5), allowing just three earned runs and eight hits. She struck out six and walked five. Adrian Emanuelson suffered the loss (3-3), allowing five earned runs and 10 hits in a complete game effort. She walked one but did not strike anyone out.
Â
Megyesi, Mosiniak, and Encalado each had two hit games to pace the Lourdes offense while Ashley Valle went 2-for-3 with a RBI for Cleary.
Â
Lourdes (9-11) will begin a six-game road trip on Thursday afternoon as the Gray Wolves head to Marion, Ind. to face Indiana Wesleyan. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 4 p.m. at Wildcat Field.
