After more than two weeks of postponements due to weather, Lourdes returned to the diamond on Wednesday evening, dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Michigan-Dearborn 12-4 and 10-9 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opener played at Alumni Field on the campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Â
The opener was scoreless into the bottom of the fourth before the Wolverines erupted for nine runs in the inning, sending 13 batters to the plate. Â Gina Verduzco capped the frame with a grand slam as Michigan-Dearborn tallied eight hits in the inning.
Â
Lourdes responded with four runs in the top of the fifth.Â
Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.) delivered a bases loaded, one out double while
Erica Marvaso (Huron Township, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) added a RBI groundout.
Â
Michigan-Dearborn tacked on one run in the fifth before adding two more to end the game in the sixth.
Â
Verduzco earned the win (9-2) in the circle for the Wolverines, allowing the four runs on seven hits in a complete game effort. She struck out six while walking two.Â
Brooke Gallaher (Oregon, Ohio/Clay HS.) suffered the loss, surrendering eight runs on six hits in 3.1 innings of work.
Â
Mosiniak and
Kayla Encalado (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) each had two hits to lead the Gray Wolf attack in the opener.
Â
Lourdes took a quick lead in game two as three straight singles by
Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.),
Taylor Genzman (Saint Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview H.S.), and Mosiniak followed by a RBI groundout from Marvaso gave the Gray Wolves a 2-0 lead.
Â
Michigan-Dearborn (19-10, 2-0 WHAC) answered with a run in the bottom of the first and plated four more in the third to take a 5-2 advantage before Lourdes posted five runs in the fourth. Megyesi hit a three-run home run while two batters later Mosiniak tallied a two-run blast, and Lourdes led 7-5.
Â
The Wolverines tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, only to see Lourdes rebuild its advantage in the top of the next frame. Mosiniak tallied a RBI double for her third hit of the game and later scored on a wild pitch.
Â
The lead would last just a half inning though, as Michigan-Dearborn scored three more in the bottom of the sixth, the last proving to be the game-winner.Â
Â
Alex Elwell earned the win (2-1) for the Wolverines, tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief while Gallaher suffered her second loss (3-7) of the day, allowing five runs and seven hits in relief.
Â
Megyesi, Mosiniak, and Marvaso all had three hits for Lourdes as part of a 15-hit attack while
Haley Roberts (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) went 2-for-4.
Â
Lourdes (9-13, 0-2) will return home to Pacesetter Park on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host Indiana Tech for a doubleheader. First pitch in game one is set for 1 p.m.
