Lourdes continued to play .500 softball on its spring trip on Friday, as the Gray Wolves split a pair of games. Lourdes fell to Grace 4-3 before rebounding to down Point Park 9-1 at Legends Way Park in Clermont, Fla.
Â
In the morning's first game, Grace scored a two-out run in the opening inning to take an early lead. The Lancers threated to add to their lead several times, leaving eight runners in scoring position in the first five innings.
Â
Lourdes rallied to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth as
Olivia Stanton (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland H.S.) singled home
Hayley Roberts (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) and
Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.) followed with a RBI double to plate
Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.).
Â
Grace (6-7) battled back in the sixth, scoring three times, all with two outs, the first two coming on back-to-back triples.
Â
Megyesi tried to jumpstart a Lourdes rally in the bottom of the seventh, leading off the inning with a home run, but the Gray Wolves were unable to mount any more offense.
Â
Chandler Elliott earned the win (5-3), tossing five innings while allowing two runs and six hits. Allison Franklin pitched the final two innings for her second save of the season, striking out four.Â
Brooke Gallaher (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) suffered the loss (1-2), giving up 12 hits while fanning six in the complete game effort.
Â
"The first game we missed some opportunities that cost us a chance to win the game," head coach
Jo Ann Gordon said afterwards. "Brooke pitched a solid game."
Â
Stanton went 2-for-3 to lead the Gray Wolves' seven-hit effort.
Â
The Gray Wolves wasted little time jumping on the scoreboard against Point Park. Stanton singled home Megyesi three batters into the game to give Lourdes the lead. Following a Mosiniak double, Roberts delivered a sacrifice fly and
Kloee Cuckler (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.) added a RBI hit to make it 3-0.
Â
After the Pioneers scored a run in the bottom of the third, Lourdes answered with four more in the fourth. Megyesi and
Breyahna Guy (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) had back-to-back RBI singles and Stanton delivered her first collegiate home run, a two-run shot to left-center, to put the Gray Wolves in front 7-1.
Â
Marissa Kostick (Saint Charles, Mich./Saint Charles H.S.) had a run-scoring single and eventually scored herself on a passed ball to give Lourdes the eight-run final advantage.
Â
Stanton finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs batted in while Megyesi also had a three-hit game. Guy,
Erica Marvaso (Huron Township, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.), and
Jaime Newman (Edgerton, Ohio/Edgerton H.S.) added two-hit efforts as Lourdes banged out 15 hits in the victory.
Â
"I challenged the team to string hits together between games and they responded, doing a much better job at the plate in game two," Gordon added.
Â
Cuckler went the distance in the circle to earn the win (2-0), allowing seven hits and one walk while striking out three. Hannah Harley suffered the loss (0-5), giving up seven runs and 10 hits in four innings of work.
Â
Lourdes (5-5) will conclude its spring trip on Saturday as the Gray Wolves face 10
th-ranked Saint Xavier at 9 a.m. and Trinity International at 11 a.m. Both games are at Sleepy Hollow Park in Leesburg, Fla.
