Lourdes Splits Doubleheader with Goshen in Home Opener

Brandon Holt (Ravenna, Ohio/Ravenna H.S.) tossed a complete game shutout in the opener for Lourdes on Tuesday before Goshen rallied in the seventh inning of game two to earn a split in the Gray Wolves' home opener at Mercy Field.  Lourdes won game one 5-0 before falling to the Maple Leafs 10-9 the nightcap.

"It was nice to get that first win," head coach Jeremy Snow said after the games.  "We competed well all day and didn't let the score change our game plan."

Holt scattered just five hits and only walked one in the shutout win (1-1), striking out two on the afternoon.  He worked out of a second and third jam in the second and allowed two base runners in the fourth, the only two times Goshen would put multiple runners on base against him.

"Holt pitched a great game for us," Snow added.

Lourdes took the lead in the second with four runs as Adam Dolesh (Richmond, Ind./Seton Catholic H.S.) tallied a sacrifice fly and Kyle Sherman (Collierville, Tenn./Rossville Christian Academy) added a RBI single.  Garrett Jex (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.), who had six hits in the twinbill, drove home two more with one of his three doubles over the two games.  Glen Crabtree (Medina, Ohio/Black River H.S.) added a sacrifice fly for the Gray Wolves in the fifth.

Jex went 2-for-3 in the win, the only Gray Wolf to have a multi-hit game as Lourdes tallied seven hits in the contest.  Noah Shail went 3-for-3 for Goshen, accounting for all but two of the Maple Leafs' five hits.

Tyler Waslawski suffered the loss (1-2), allowing five runs and seven hits along with two walks in five innings.

Lourdes struck first in game two as well as Dolesh delivered a run-scoring single in the bottom of the second.  Goshen responded by sending 10 hitters to the plate in the third, scoring six runs on seven hits, including two doubles.

Trailing 6-1, Lourdes immediately tied the game as the first six batters reached in the bottom of the third.  Dallas Riggs (Prescott, Ariz./Paradise Valley H.S.) doubled home two runs while George Pastor (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.) added a two-run single.  Zak Laubscher's (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.) knotted the game.

One inning later Lourdes took the lead.  Jex's second double of the game plated Sherman and before Riggs singled home Jex to make it 8-6 Gray Wolves.  Goshen cut the lead to 8-7 in the fifth with a single run, leading to the seventh inning rally.

Goshen took advantage of a walk, a wild pitch, and two hit batsmen to load the bases before Preston Carr doubled home three runs to give the Maple Leafs the lead.  Sherman doubled home Pastor in the bottom of the seventh, but Lourdes stranded the tying and winning runs in scoring position.

"Game two was a tough loss," Snow said.  "We need to do a better job of coming out of the bullpen and throwing strikes."

Jex went 4-for-4 in game two while Riggs, Pastor, and Crabtree had two hits each as part of a 12-hit effort.

James Stricker earned the win (1-0) in relief for Goshen (5-10), while Trent Lynn earned the save pitching in the seventh inning.  Collin Gottschalk (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.) suffered the loss (0-1) for Lourdes in relief.

Lourdes (1-9) will return to action on Saturday as the Gray Wolves head to Indianapolis to face Marian.  First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. at MU Ballpark.
