A 14-1 run by Indiana Tech spanning 23 minutes proved to be the difference on Wednesday evening as fourth-ranked Indiana Tech defeated Lourdes 21-8, spoiling Senior Day for the Gray Wolves at Wildcat Stadium.
Lourdes kept the game close for the first 18 minutes, as
Alyssa Long (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn H.S.) scored three times and the Gray Wolves trailed just 4-3. The Warriors ended the half scoring seven of the final eight goals though, with only a tally by
Haley Brown (Temperance, Mich./Bedford H.S.) interrupting the run, and the guests took an 11-4 lead into halftime.
"For the first 17 minutes of the game we showed what we are capable of doing both on offense and on defense," head coach
Paul Sieben said. "We had excellent ball control."
Indiana Tech (12-1, 8-1 WHAC) added the first seven goals of the second half in a span of 13 minutes to increase the lead to 18-4 before the Gray Wolves found the back of the cage four straight times. Long had three more tallies to finish with six goals while
Katie Cerveny (Erie, Mich./Mason Senior H.S.) celebrated Senior Day with a goal in her first game back from injury. The Warriors added three late goals for the game's final margin.
"Their pressure defense and fire power on offense took over and we started losing control of the ball," Sieben added. We need to demonstrate more patience on offense."
Kristina Scott led Indiana Tech with six goals while Alexa Winter and Aubri Hazen each added four more. The Warriors outshot Lourdes 33-19 for the game.
Kiley Ketteman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson H.S.) made nine saves in net for the Gray Wolves while Meaghan Eldridge and Sydney Davis combined to make five stops for the Warriors.
Cerveny, along with
Jessie Frost (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.) and
Lauren Pelton (Monclova, Ohio/Springfield H.S.), were honored prior to the game.
Lourdes (4-8, 1-6) will take to the road on Friday afternoon as the Gray Wolves travel to Grand Rapids, Mich. to face Aquinas. The opening draw is set for 1 p.m. at Aquinas Athletic Field in a make-up of an April 6 postponement.
