Lourdes Rallies for Record-Setting Win at Aquinas

Jessie Frost (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.) scored the game-winning goal with 1:58 remaining on Friday afternoon, lifting Lourdes to a 9-8, come-from-behind victory over Aquinas at the Aquinas Athletic Field in Grand Rapids, Mich., in a make-up contest from an April 6 postponement.

The victory sets a new school record for wins in a season (5) for the Gray Wolves, and also marks the first road Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference triumph in program history.

"We showed a great deal of mental toughness both on offense and defense today," head coach Paul Sieben said after the victory.  "We demonstrated the ability to fight back several times."

Lourdes trailed 6-3 at halftime before three goals, two from Haley Brown (Temperance, Mich./Bedford H.S.) sandwiched around a tally from Alyssa Long (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn H.S.) tied the game at six with 23:06 remaining.  Aquinas retook the lead with back-to-back tallies, the second coming with 15:50 left in the second half.

Klarque Scott (Chicago, Ill./Montini Catholic H.S.) pulled Lourdes to within one with 8:20 remaining while Long added her third tally of the game to knot the contest at eight at the 5:28 mark.  Frost put Lourdes in front for good with under two minutes to play, Scott collected the ensuing draw control, and the Gray Wolves were able to run out the clock.

"We did a good job with ball control today," Sieben added.

Shelby Kellar (Holland, Ohio/Saint Ursula H.S.) and Katie Cerveny (Erie, Mich./Mason Senior H.S.) tallied goals in the first half for the Gray Wolves as well on the afternoon, and Lourdes outshot the Saints 33-24 for the game, including 19-5 after halftime.

Kiley Ketteman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson H.S.) made nine saves in goal while Long and Hannah Cullis (Fort Worth, Texas/Central H.S.) each collected six groundballs.  Frost had a team-high five draw controls.

Cara Burns led Aquinas (0-13, 0-9 WHAC) with three goals.

Lourdes (5-8, 2-6) will close out the road portion of the regular season on Saturday evening as the Gray Wolves head to Adrian, Mich. to battle Siena Heights.  The opening draw is set for 7:30 p.m. at O'Laughlin Stadium.
