Lourdes picked up its first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference victory of the season on Wednesday night, and in the process earned its first victory ever against Madonna, splitting a doubleheader at Pacesetter Park. Madonna won the opener 10-7 before the Gray Wolves won the nightcap 4-3.
Â
"We finally put all three phases of the game together in game two," head coach
Jo Ann Gordon said afterwards. "We had a lot of positive energy, got some timely hitting, and took advantage of their mistakes."
Â
Lourdes jumped out to an early lead with a pair of unearned runs in the opening inning. With two outs
Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.) and
Erica Marvaso (Huron Township, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) singled and
Kayla Encalado (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) reached on an error to plate the game's first run.Â
Hayley Roberts (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) followed with a RBI single, giving the Gray Wolves the early 2-0 lead.
Â
Madonna (26-9, 8-4 WHAC) tied the game with a pair of two-out RBIs in the third, but Lourdes immediately answered. Mosiniak led off with a single and moved to second as Marvaso reached on a sacrifice bunt that was misplayed by the Crusaders. Roberts delivered a two-run double to right-center, putting the Gray Wolves ahead for good.
Â
The Crusaders cut their deficit in half in the top of the fourth, but
Marissa Kostick (Saint Charles, Mich./Saint Charles H.S.) settled in the circle, and retired the final 12 Madonna hitters she faced to earn the complete game victory (5-3). Kostick allowed just two walks and five hits in the victory while striking out six.
Â
"We got a dominant pitching performance from Marissa and had some strong defense behind her," Gordon added.
Â
Roberts and Mosiniak each had two hits in the game, accounting for half of the team's eight hits in game two.
Â
Paige Montague suffered the loss (11-5) in the circle, despite allowing just one earned run in her complete game effort.
Â
Madonna built a 3-0 lead midway through game one with two runs in the third and one in the fourth before Roberts hit a three-run home run, her first of the season, to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth.
Â
The Crusaders retook the lead in the fifth, sending 11 batters to the plate while scoring seven times.
Â
Lourdes tallied three runs in the bottom of the sixth, two on a RBI single by
Taylor Genzman (Saint Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) and another on a base hit by
Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.). Encalado added a RBI single with two outs in the seventh to close out the Gray Wolf scoring.
Â
Roberts, Encalado, and
Jaime Newman (Edgerton, Ohio/Edgerton H.S.) all had three hits for the Gray Wolves in the opener while Megyesi had two more as Lourdes tallied 13 for the game.
Â
Erin Combs earned the win (13-3) in the circle, going the distance, while
Brooke Gallaher (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) suffered the loss (3-9) in relief.
Â
Lourdes (10-18, 1-7 WHAC) will remain home on Thursday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host Cornerstone at Pacesetter Park. The first pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 4 p.m.
