Lourdes opened the second half of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action on Saturday, suffering a 21-5 loss to fourth-ranked Davenport on a cold, snowy Saturday afternoon at the DU Turf Field in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Alyssa Long (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn H.S.) accounted for all five goals for the Gray Wolves, and also led Lourdes with nine groundballs in the contest. The sophomore tallied 10 of the team's 15 shot attempts on the afternoon.
"Alyssa had a standout performance despite being double and tripled teamed at times today," head coach
Paul Sieben said. "Our team never gave up, fighting through the snowstorm."
Davenport (7-1, 6-0 WHAC) jumped out to an 8-1 lead just over 15 minutes into the contest before Long scored three times in a nine minute span for the Gray Wolves. Davenport held a 12-4 lead at halftime, and scored nine of the game's 10 second half goals in the victory.
Brooke Knoll led Davenport, scoring five goals on the day, as nine different Panthers found the back of the cage in the game. Hanna Bush had a seven-point game with three goals and four assists and the Panthers finished with a 32-15 shot advantage in the game.
"We were unable to stop the two leading scorers of their potent offense," Sieben added.
Kiley Ketteman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson H.S.) made five saves for the Gray Wolves in goal while Samantha Powers and Alex Yates shared time in the net, and combined to make five stops for Davenport.
"Mistakes and losses teach us the best lessons to improve upon," Sieben concluded. "We'll be ready to go again on Wednesday."
Lourdes (4-7, 1-5) will remain on the road and return to Grand Rapids on Wednesday evening to continue WHAC play. The Gray Wolves will face Aquinas beginning at 7 p.m. at the Aquinas Athletic Field.
