Lourdes rebounded from a 12-11 loss in the opener of Sunday's doubleheader to defeat Siena Heights 10-4 in game two at Christensen Field in Adrian, Mich.
Â
The Gray Wolves tallied 21 hits in the two games, but defensively allowed seven unearned runs, including five that proved to be decisive in the opener.
Â
"We hit the ball well enough to win two games today," head coach
Jo Ann Gordon said. "We had a great offensive approach at the plate."
Â
The opener went back-and-forth, with Lourdes scoring three unearned runs in the opening inning before the Saints responded with two tallies of their own in the bottom of the first. Siena Heights took the lead with the five unearned runs in the second, building a 7-3 lead.
Â
A sacrifice fly by
Haley Roberts (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) pulled the Gray Wolves to within three, only to have the Saints respond with a run of their own in the bottom of the third.
Â
Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) hit a two-run home run to pull Lourdes within two in the fourth and a RBI double by Roberts followed by a Saints' error allowed the Gray Wolves to tie the game at eight heading into the bottom of the fifth.
Â
The Saints answered quickly, plating four in the inning, three coming on a home run by Megan Jones. Lourdes tried to rally in the late innings, with
Kayla Encalado (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) singling home two in the sixth and
Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.) tripling home a run in the seventh. The Gray Wolves would strand the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the seventh.
Â
Olivia Stanton (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland H.S.) went 3-for-3 with two doubles for the Gray Wolves in the opener while
Taylor Genzman (Saint Clair Shores, Mich./Saint Charles H.S.) also had a three-hit game.
Â
Leslie Ducat earned the win in the circle for the Saints while
Marissa Kostick (Saint Charles, Mich./Saint Charles H.S.) suffered the loss.
Â
In game two Lourdes jumped on top in the opening inning with a pair of runs as Stanton delivered yet another double and scored on an error.Â
Erica Marvaso (Huron Township, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) drove in a run with a groundout in the third and Roberts followed with a RBI single to make it 4-0.
Â
After the Saints plated a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the third, Lourdes answered quickly with a run in the fourth. Leading 5-2 heading to the fifth, the Gray Wolves crossed the plate five times in the top of the fifth, with Megyesi delivering a two-run single and
Jaime Newman (Edgerton, Ohio/Edgerton H.S.) following with a two-run double. Encalado also had a RBI hit in the frame.
Â
Siena Heights (24-20, 8-6 WHAC) tallied two runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the game, but would not score any more as
Brooke Gallaher (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) went the distance to earn the victory. She allowed just two earned runs and six hits while striking out four.
Â
"Brooke threw a really good game two for us today," Gordon added.
Â
Arica Vasquez suffered the loss, allowing six earned runs in 4.1 innings of work.
Â
Megyesi went 4-for-5 for Lourdes to lead the Gray Wolves' 10-hit effort.
