Lourdes battled 13
th-ranked Davenport to a pair of one-run games on Friday, falling 3-2 in eight innings and 5-4 at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex in Grand Rapids, Mich.
The opener was a pitcher's duel, with
Marissa Kostick (Saint Charles, Mich./Saint Charles H.S.) matching zeros on the scoreboard with Davenport's Emily Maves through four-and-a-half innings. Lourdes stranded at least one runner in each of the first five innings, including runners on second and third in both the fourth and fifth frames.
Kostick carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning, when the Panthers led off the bottom half of the inning with a lead-off walk. After a stolen base, Alyssa Koziol broke up the no-hitter with a single to center, scoring the game's first run. A two out single followed in the inning, putting Davenport in front 2-0.
The Panthers maintained the 2-0 lead until the seventh when
Hillary West (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) led off with a single and
Taylor Genzman (Saint Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) dropped in a base hit over third base. A groundout moved pinch runner
Marche' Venable (Youngstown, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney H.S.) and Genzman to second and third with two outs.
Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.) ripped a double to the gap in left-center, tying the game at two, forcing extra innings.
Lourdes threatened again in the eighth, putting runners on second and third, but stranded both, two of 10 baserunners left on base in the contest for the Gray Wolves. Davenport won the game in the bottom of the eighth on a one-out double by Nicole Vitale, just the fourth hit of the game against Kostick.
Maves earned the complete game win (19-4), allowing nine hits while striking out three. Kostick suffered the loss (6-7), striking out three and walking three.
Kayla Encalado (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) went 3-for-4 for the Gray Wolves at the plate.
Davenport (35-10, 15-3 WHAC) struck quickly in game two, scoring five times in the first inning. Alyssa Eastman hit a two-run home run and Koziol added a three-run blast in the opening frame.
The Gray Wolves got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth as Mosiniak led off with a triple to right that hit the chalk and
Hayley Roberts (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) delivered a one-out double to straightaway center, pulling Lourdes within four, 5-1.
Mosiniak went deep to left-center for her team-leading sixth home run of the season to lead off the sixth inning.
In the circle,
Samantha Shirling (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood H.S.) came on in relief of
Brooke Gallaher (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) to start the second inning, and kept the Panthers off of the scoreboard to keep the Gray Wolves in the game. She allowed just four hits in her five innings of relief while striking out four.
Lourdes tried to mount a rally in the seventh as West walked to lead off and
Jaime Newman (Edgerton, Ohio/Edgerton H.S.) singled to put runners at the corners with two outs. The Panthers intentionally walked Mosiniak and
Olivia Stanton (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland H.S.) laced a double to the gap in left-center, plating Genzman, who reached on a fielder's choice, and Newman. Mosiniak tried to score as well, but a perfect relay throw cut her down at the plate.
Mallory Teunissen earned the win (15-5) for the Panthers, allowing seven hits in the complete game effort. Gallaher suffered the loss (4-13), tossing just the opening frame.
Mosiniak and Roberts each had two hits in game two for the Gray Wolves.
Lourdes (12-26, 3-13) will remain in Grand Rapids on Saturday to close out the regular season with a twinbill at Aquinas. First pitch in game one is set for 12 p.m. at Michigan Fuller Field.
