Lourdes seniors all produced on Sunday afternoon as the Gray Wolves celebrated Senior Day by sweeping Marygrove 10-0 and 6-4 at Mercy Field.
"It was great to see all of the seniors contribute today," head coach
Jeremy Snow said afterwards.
In the opener, senior
Brandon Holt (Ravenna, Ohio/Ravenna H.S.) blanked the Mustangs, allowing just two hits while striking out four to earn the complete game win (3-4).
The Gray Wolves took the lead in the third on back-to-back RBI singles from seniors
Garrett Jex (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.) and
Nick Toth (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson H.S.). In the fifth,
Zak Laubscher (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.) recorded a sacrifice fly,
George Pastor (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.) had a RBI single, and two more runs scored on an error in the outfield, increasing the lead to 6-0.
Laubscher delivered a RBI single and Toth crushed his first home run of the season to right, a three-run blast, in the sixth inning, allowing Lourdes to earn the seven inning victory via run rule.
Toth went 3-for-4 in the opener with four runs batted in while
Dallas Riggs (Prescott, Ariz./Paradise Valley H.S.) and
Bill Laranga (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee H.S.) had two hits each.
Devin Stanley (Euclid, Ohio/Saint Edward H.S.) scored three times.
Joe Gignac went the distance in the loss (0-9) for Marygrove, allowing 10 hits and eight earned runs.
Marygrove (3-37, 2-26 WHAC) took an early 3-0 lead in game two, scoring all three runs in the opening inning. Pastor scored on a wild pitch in the second and Holt reached on an error, plating senior
Alex Samson (Orrville, Ohio/Orrville H.S.), who singled earlier in the inning, to pull Lourdes within one.
After the Mustangs pushed the lead back to 4-2, Laubscher led off the bottom of the fourth being hit by a pitch. He moved all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jex, and scored on a Toth groundout.
Trailing 4-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth, Stanley doubled and moved to third on a single by Laubscher. Jex walked, loading the bases, and Toth hit a grounder to first that was thrown away for an error, allowing Stanley to score, tying the game. A wild pitch plated Laubscher, putting Lourdes in front, and Riggs delivered a sacrifice fly to score Jex with an insurance tally.
Matt York (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) earned his first collegiate win (1-0) in relief, tossing two scoreless innings while striking out three, and Holt came out of the bullpen to toss a scoreless ninth for his fifth save of the year.
Samson led the Gray Wolves with two of their six hits at the plate.
Reed Banner suffered the loss (0-10), allowing six hits and four runs while walking five in complete game effort.
Lourdes (13-34, 7-21) will remain home on Thursday to begin its final WHAC series of the year, hosting Concordia (Mich.). First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 4 p.m. at Mercy Field.
