Lourdes closed the 2016 season at Mercy Field on Friday evening, sweeping Concordia (Mich.) 7-4 and 3-2 in 10 innings.
"It was just a great day of baseball," head coach
Jeremy Snow said afterwards. "It was a great way to send out seniors out and finish the season."
After opening game one allowing a run in the top of the first, Lourdes responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame as
Nick Toth (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson H.S.) doubled home
Zak Laubscher (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.) and
Cory Fallwell (Tucson, Ariz./Palo Verde H.S.).
The Gray Wolves added three more in the second.
Glen Crabtree (Medina, Ohio/Black River H.S.) scored on a throwing error and
Garrett Jex (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.) drove home
Kyle Sherman (Collierville, Tenn./Rossville Christian Academy) with a groundout. Toth followed with a RBI single, making it 5-1 Lourdes.
Laubscher increased the lead to five with a run-scoring single in the third before Concordia answered with a tally in the fourth. A
Devin Stanley (Euclid, Ohio/Saint Edward H.S.) RBI single in the sixth gave the Gray Wolves another insurance run, which proved important as the Cardinals scored twice in the ninth.
Toth finished the game 4-for-5 with three runs batted in to lead a 13-hit attack.
Brandon Holt (Ravenna, Ohio/Ravenna H.S.) went the distance for the win (4-4), allowing just one earned run and six hits. Mike Clevenger suffered the loss (1-3), surrendering five runs in 1.1 innings on the hill.
Lourdes scored first in the nightcap as well as
Alex Samson (Orrville, Ohio/Orrville H.S.) singled home
Dallas Riggs (Prescott, Ariz./Paradise Valley H.S.) with the game's first run.
Bill Laranga (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee H.S.) carried a no-hitter into the sixth when the Cardinals tied the game. Concordia took the lead in the seventh, but the Gray Wolves responded in the bottom half to force extra innings. Sherman singled home Crabtree with one out.
Concordia (30-22, 20-13 WHAC) loaded the bases in both the eighth and ninth, but failed to score and Stanley delivered the walk-off hit in the 10
th, plating Samson with the winning run.
Mike Vomastek (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson H.S.) earned the win (1-0) on the mound, tossing a scoreless 10
th while Keith Phillips took the loss (0-1).
Crabtree went 4-for-4 in game two as Lourdes tallied 12 hits.
Lourdes closes its season 15-36 overall and 9-23 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference, moving into eighth place on the final day of the year.
